End Fossil Fuels Scotland

This September, millions of people around the world will take to the streets to demand a rapid, just, and equitable end to fossil fuels as world leaders gather at the United Nations’ Climate Ambition Summit in New York.

In Scotland, the Edinburgh Climate Coalition and Friends of the Earth Scotland have initiated a mobilisation and series of outreach events in solidarity with the global campaign, gaining support from wider environmental groups, such as Fridays for Future, XR Edinburgh, ScotE3, Greenpeace (Edinburgh), Youth in Resistance and RS21.

Join by taking part in the Scottish mobilisation in Edinburgh or hosting your own local 100 ‘Oil Fields’ Outreach Event!

Edinburgh mobilisation on Saturday 16th September. Assembling at The Mound in Edinburgh at 11:00 AM.

The biggest cause of the climate crisis is fossil fuels. The coal, oil and gas industry is responsible for the climate crisis and drives a predatory and destructive economic system that harms people and the planet, fuelling climate breakdown. Fossil fuels are bad for the climate, ecosystems, our people, our health, our democracies, and our economies.

We are facing another winter where people in Scotland can’t afford their energy bills to heat their homes. More oil and gas sold on international markets will not benefit us, what would save us money is a mass roll out of home insulation and investment in cheaper green energy such as wind farms.

In Aberdeen, the oil industry is attempting to land grab and industrialise St Fitticks Park – the last accessible green space available to the people of Torry. The so-called “Energy Transition Zone” proposed by the oil industry is nothing but corporate Greenwashing.

Yet, the UK Government has just announced plans to licence 100 new oil fields in the North Sea, committing us to decades of polluting emissions. The Scottish Government is yet to speak out against the looming Rosebank oil field – the biggest undeveloped oil field in the North Sea, and a new gas power station in Peterhead.

Workers in the offshore oil and gas industry have written a plan for a fair transition to a renewable energy system – it’s time to demand that the UK and Scottish governments take them seriously and put it into action.

Join the Edinburgh Mobilisation

On September 16th a cross-organisation mobilisation will take place in Edinburgh, joining the voices of millions of people across the globe.

Add your voice and demand the UK Government to take climate change seriously and for the Scottish Parliament to speak up against the new oil field licenses and looming Rosebank oil field!

Host a 100 'Oil Fields' Outreach Event

To build momentum up to the mobilisation, bring this conversation into more communities across Scotland, and highlight outrage towards the UK Government’s plans to licence 100 new oil fields this Autumn – Scotland will hold 100 ‘Oil Fields’ outreach events. Organise one in your community!

Why these outreach events?

The aim is to get conversations started in your local community and show that throughout Scotland there is a will to move away from fossil fuels towards a fair and equitable system focused on clean energy, respect for nature and a just transition for workers in the offshore industry.

What can I do?

Create a visual representation of an oil field, or oil spill, in a public place. Just make sure it is something that isn’t permanent and won’t damage your local environment. This could be done with a paddling pool with water dyed black, a large piece of black fabric on the ground – get as creative as you want! Anything that is attention grabbing and will get people talking!

Where could I do it?

Stay local! It could be on your street, in a nearby park or any other public space where you can engage your community and neighbours.

How many people would I need?

As few or as many as you like! It could be as small as a group of 2 people – neighbours, friends or members of a local group.

This conversation needs to happen in every community across Scotland, the more people join the higher the impact!

For any questions related to the outreach events, you can email Kate at [email protected].
