We will be participating and encouraging our members to join us in participating in the Fridays of the Future protest on the 24th/31st of March 2023 12noon to 14:00
We will join either a larger organised protest as the time for this is published (likely between 12 and 2 pm) within the city centre or in front of Marischal College.
Alternatively, we will advertise and attend a Fridays for the Future event on campus (similarly around 12-2pm). For this we would likely collaborate with other societies such as Amnesty International, as we have done before.
This event would take place outside of the Sir Duncan Rice Library or Old King’s College.
Bringing a sign would be recommended and much appreciated.
These events are open for anyone to join, as this issue affects us all.

On 25th of March 11:00 – 13:00, we’ll be having a pollinator expert in The Secret Garden who will talk about the importance of pollinators and how climate change is impacting them.
As you may know, we’re starting a pollinators project (a continuation of Bugtropolis) in which we will be building some beehives and bee houses for solitary bees and bumblebees, but also making wildflower patches and creating suitable environments for butterflies!
So, this day we’ll start making some houses with the guidance of the expert!
The event will take place in The Secret Garden 11am, next to the Butchart Centre, on University Road (it’s on Google Maps!). Don’t hesitate to contact us if you’re unsure about the location.
The event is open to everyone! Adults, children, students, non-students… even pets!
Access to The Secret Garden is via a dust/gravel car park (off University Road).

In this interactive workshop we’ll be talking about what community organisations can do to help reduce car use in their local area. We’ll cover greenhouse gas emissions in Scotland, to what extent transport contributes to this, and how we measure up globally. We’ll also talk about how to set up and develop an active travel project. This could be an initiative that will directly help people to get walking, wheeling and cycling, or a community action plan for encouraging sustainable travel in your area. We’ll also discuss the resources, funding and support that Sustrans can provide, and local group Aberdeen Cycle Forum will be talking about the work they do and how you can get involved.

‘Burnt Out’ is a solo dance theatre work centred around our changing climate. Weaving spoken word and movement we are taken on a journey through past bushfires including Penny’s own experiences, through their ignition and devastation, and left with space to ponder how we got here.
Embedded in its soundscape are sounds from Black Summer – of magpies that have learnt to mimic emergency sires, of the shark sirens used to draw attention to the fire blackened skies, and of helicopters circling overhead. Original music from Paul Michael Henry interwoven with the stark lighting of Great Snakes.
Bringing together both past and future, fact and personal lived account, ‘Burnt Out’ is at once an intimate personal story and a universal meditation and reflection on our changing climate.

On 2nd of April, from 11am to 2pm, alongside our usual gardening session, we will be having an upcycling workshop in which we will be using recyclable materials to make seedling trays. In them, we will sow some seeds of our favourite veggies to grow at home! So please start collecting plastic bottles, toilet paper rolls, egg cartons or/and milk/juice cartons. Don’t forget to bring them to the session on the 2nd of April!
As in our weekly sessions, this workshop will take place in The Secret Garden, next to the Butchart Centre, on University Road (it’s on Google Maps!). Don’t hesitate to contact us if you’re unsure about the location.
The event is open to everyone! Adults, children, students, non-students… even pets! Access to The Secret Garden is via a dust/gravel car park (off University Road).

How does it feel to find oneself on a ‘burning platform’ with a pressing need for change but limited options? Pibroch, is a multimedia theatre production which explores parallels between the Climate Emergency and the Piper Alpha Disaster in 1988. Created by Aberdeenshire – based writer and artist, John Bolland, this exciting new production uses words, live music and striking visual imagery to represent the personal and social experiences of Piper Alpha survivors and their relationship to the challenges each of us face in a warming world. Co-directed by Mark Thomson, former Artistic Director at the Royal Lyceum in Edinburgh, Pibroch is crafted by an outstanding team of theatre professionals. John Bolland’s words are complemented by Fraser Fifield who provides live musical accompaniment to the performance.
Age 12+ advised

‘Paws on Plastic Day’ on Sunday, 2nd April is a day of action when we invite all dog owners, plus our 23,000 members and followers across social media, including thousands in North East Scotland, to get out and pick up a few pieces of litter on walks with their dogs to protect animals, communities and our precious environment.
Our members pick up every day on walks, removing over 34 million pieces of litter every year. On 2nd April all we ask is to pick up a bit more, perhaps with a group of family members or friends. It feels great to take a positive action which makes an immediate, visible difference to an area! Fantastic for mental health & inclusive for all the family.
We would ask that you then post about your achievements on social media with our hashtag #pawsonplastic. This is event is part of the national Spring Clean running 17th March – 17th April organised by Keep Scotland Beautiful.
All are responsible for their own safety and those of their companions. Gloves/litter pickers are recommended & care taken when touching anything.
