The scavenger hunt will be part of an act of
Craftivism is (a form of activism, that is centred on practices of craft) Grey
Matters and Fabric and Finery are organising the knitting of canaries.
“the yellow canary is the perfect
symbol for this project. They need clean air to be able to fly high in the sky
and far afield. In years gone by, they used to accompany coal miners into the
mines and give warning signals when the air was too toxic to work in. Miners
often called their canary partners ‘colleagues’ and cared so much for them that
they wanted to protect them from harm, sometimes more than
themselves. Just as canaries were effective warning signs then, our Gentle
Protest will be a kind, encouraging warning for Members of Parliament now. It
will remind them that they can help nature, wildlife and humans flourish before
it’s too late.”
https://craftivist-collective.com/blog/2021/06/canarycraftivists/The canaries will be hidden in the shops of our Plastic Free Climate
Champion award winners, twith a card warning of the threat of
climate change and a simple action we can take to help lower our carbon
footprint. This scavenger hunt is for families with prizes. Collect your hunt card from The Toy Shop and return the completed card back for your prize.
Then after the week
the canaries will be gathered up and sent to our local MP Brendan O’Hara with an
accompanying letter.
