The third discussion session will be about climate justice and borders and is co-facilitated by the London-based Global Justice Bloc. The discussion will explore the intersections of climate justice and migrant justice, focusing on the recently announced plans for a new detention centre for migrant women in Durham.
What are the connections between climate change, environmental collapse and migration? Do the roots of climate breakdown and of the rise in refugees globally intersect? How does the border regime in the UK work and who benefits from the border industry? How does the hostile environment foster racism? Do we have to be wary of ecological narratives being turned against migrants? What would a borderless world look like? How can we stand in solidarity with refugees and campaign for migrant justice? What can this solidarity look like in practice in the North East?
These are some of the questions that talk will seek to answer in an informal and self-organised setting.
The organiser will send out the suggested readings and other materials and zoom link closer to the date. Don’t worry if you don’t have time to do the readings, everyone is welcome to contribute!
