Community mapping involves residents working together to map important features of their area, sharing and making visible their knowledge of that place and what is special about it. Community mapping has seen increasing use as a means of environmental engagement and empowerment in Scotland. Sustainability organisations, community groups, and artists have all been drawn to this approach and have drawn numerous benefits from it.

In this time of coronavirus, the need to stay connected together as a community and to prevent progress on tackling climate change and related environmental issues from being lost has become ever more acute. The development of online community mapping tools and other creative approaches to community mapping can be a useful way of tackling these issues.

This event will provide the opportunity to share knowledge and advice around community mapping and to learn about recent developments. The session will feature contributions from two speakers:

  • Hannah Clinch (Tacit Tacit) will introduce and explain the international online Green Mapping tool and give attendees the chance to experiment with it
  • Daniel McKendry (Architecture and Design Scotland) will offer a range of examples of Scottish-based mapping projects and discuss the lessons we can learn from them.

There will also be opportunities for discussion and experimentation in breakout groups and to share your ideas with other attendees. The event is open to anyone with an interest in community mapping; you can be from any background and with any level of expertise.

Sign up for a free on Eventbrite and you will receive a link to join the Zoom call on the day of the event.
