A sea-themed storytelling performance for all the family
Janis Mackay and Donald Scott
Wee Seals & Selkies
Janis Mackay, a rare mix of storyteller, actress and award-winning children’s author, together with fiddle player Donald Scott, takes the audience to a remote beach in the far north of Scotland where the author used to live. Here she shares her inspiration for writing her books; the stories behind the stories! Janis tells the true story of a seal born in her garden. She tells also how the atmospheric wild setting gave rise to a magical re-imagining of the selkie myth.
Her stories, of a wee seal and of a selkie, contain elements of danger, poignancy and conflict, but ultimately are tender and uplifting with the author’s love of the sea and wildlife shining through.
Janis, who wrote and performs the show, won the Kelpies prize for her first novel, Magnus Fin and the Ocean Quest and in 2013 won the Scottish Children’s Book Awards for her novel, ‘The Accidental Time Traveller.’ Donald Scott, a well- seasoned and energetic performer, joins Janis, adding evocative Scottish fiddle music to help transport the audience the far-flung shores.
Wee Seals & Selkies, for all the family, brings to life, via the medium of storytelling and fiddle music, the tender wonder of the sea, of wildlife, and adds a little magic too.
