Film Synopsis: The Last Ice
Director: Scott Ressler | Countries of production: United States | Year: 2019 | Length: 83 min
Language: English, Greenlandic, Inuktitut with English subtitles | Age: 8+ years
Though the Inuit have lived for hundreds of years in and around the frozen Arctic ocean, a century of colonisation and resource exploitation has had a dramatic impact on their lives and their lands. Now the climate crisis is making the sea ice disappear, their hunting grounds are melting beneath their feet and communities are being separated. Meanwhile, global business interests are eyeing up the Pikialasorsuaq, the newly accessible stretch of water between Greenland and Canada, for oil and gas exploration, fishing, shipping and tourism.
What does the future hold for Inuit youth? In Northern Greenland, Aleqatsiaq Peary is learning traditional hunting methods from his uncle while across the water, in Nunavut, Maatalii Okalik is finding her voice as a youth activist. Through their stories, and the testimonies of Inuit leaders such as John Amagoalik, The Last Ice chronicles an essential fight for the survival of a culture – and an entire ecosystem.
