ACA’s February café focuses on businesses that commit to meet verifiable social and environmental standards, public transparency and accountability to balance profit and purpose.
Bob Pringle, ACA volunteer, will introduce the session to review the range of business ethical and environmental standards that exist worldwide. These include Fairtrade, B Corps, ISO 26000, Rainbow Alliance, One Planet Prosperity, etc.
Archie Gibson, Executive Director, Agrico UK Ltd, Forfar, will recount his company’s journey to ISO 26000 accreditation and review its impact on his business.
Grant Keenan, CEO Keenan Recycling, Aberdeen, will, on hearing Mr Gibson’s pitch, respond with his views as to whether B Corps or ISO 26000 accreditation would be something that he would consider for his company.
Q&A session. Questions and views from the floor will be sought, with a popular vote at the end as to whether a move to accreditation would be in Keenan’s best interest.
While the café has a serious purpose, the intention is to have a lively debate which will draw out the benefits and disadvantages of these accreditation schemes.
For those who wish to pursue the issue after the 9 pm deadline, the Stag Bar, 100 m down the road in Crown St, is a pleasant venue for further discussion.

Speakers
We’ll hear from Christina Sinclair about her journey from BBC The Social contributor to working with the Natural History Unit on Frozen Planet II’s digital campaign. She’ll also share her top tips for how to engage audiences on a difficult topic.
Christina joined BBC The Social as a contributor in 2020 with the aim to inspire and educate audiences about the amazing nature found around Scottish coastlines, from otters to jellyfish, as well as how we can protect it. Fast forward to 2023 and she’s now an Assistant Producer with the BBC Natural History Unit making short films to inspire action for the climate crisis. In this session Christina will describe how her career has progressed over the years and share some top tips on how to make engaging environmental content.
About BBC The Social
We are a talent development project at BBC Scotland called BBC The Social. We work with new content creators from all across Scotland and have helped develop people’s skills to get them into the media industry in jobs and also helped them develop content for the BBC Scotland channel and iPlayer and beyond. We’re always looking for new contributors and want to fully represent Scotland and our audience. In particular we’re looking for new content creators to cover environmental issues and topics. We have covered these before but are always looking for new and engaging ways to cover these – here’s a collection of our previous content on the topic.

How do we make sure everyone’s voices are heard as groups make decisions togetherWhat are some ways to reconcile differences in opinion? How do you design an agenda to ensure all of the important points are covered? How do we ensure that our meetings are as inclusive and accessible as possible?
These questions may not be glamorous but facilitating great meetings is key to the success of any activist group, campaign, or movement. In this training with Young Friends of the Earth Scotland we’ll explore this and more. You should leave feeling equipped with the skills and knowledge you’ll need to volunteer to facilitate meetings, within and outside the Stop Rosebank campaign.

Event Details
A simple social gathering with facilitators where we can talk about our thoughts and feelings about the climate emergency.
A Climate Café is an opportunity to give ourselves time to sit, perhaps with a hot drink and a slice of cake, and describe our thoughts and feelings about the crises of our ecology.
Climate Cafés are bounded by confidentiality although they are not therapy sessions. We invite you to take part in a warm, hospitable, facilitated conversation where you can reflect on your and others’ feelings without being bounced into action. This is one way of coping with the challenges facing us all.
This Climate Café will be held every second Wednesday of the month at the Salisbury Centre, an inclusive community space just east of the Meadows in Edinburgh. Tea and hot drinks will be available from the Salisbury Centre’s kitchen (small donation suggested), and the facilitators will provide some biscuits and snacks. You are welcome to bring your own too!
More about Climate Cafés
The focus of discussion is participants’ thoughts and feelings about the climate and ecological crisis. There are no guest speakers and no talks, and it is an advice-free zone. You can find out more about it here.
This event is free and anyone aged 18 years and over, from any background, is warmly welcome. Please feel free to share the event with your friends and family.
There is a limit on numbers to ensure space for discussion. If all the spaces are full please do join the waitlist or register your interest in future sessions by writing to us at [email protected].

Event Details
Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has been running beach cleans and their flagship event, Great British Beach Clean, for 25 years. Every year, staff and volunteers head to beaches up and down the coast to collect litter and record data about what they find, contributing to citizen science. So far 319 tonnes of litter at the Great British Beach Clean events have been collected. This informs various projects MCS are involved with, and is shared with the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) contributing to a worldwide report on litter levels. All this data has helped inform new policies to tackle beach litter and plastic pollution in the UK such as the plastic bag charge, a ban on microplastics in personal care products and better wet wipe labelling
Event Details
On the proposed date of the 11/2/23 at 10 am. I will running a beach clean in Pettycur Bay. We will have litter pickers, bags and clipboards but if you have your own please bring them as numbers will be limited. Unlike other litter picks you might have done we will be collecting of a survey of the litter collected. These surveys are the most important part of the day other than having some fun on the beach with like minded people.
Also worth knowing…
What to bring: We’d recommend you pack a rucksack with a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs, hand sanitiser, and perhaps some snacks and a drink (in a reusable bottle, of course).
What to wear: If you’re picking up litter with your hands it’s worth wearing a strong pair of gloves – like gardening gloves – just to make sure you’re protected. Sturdy shoes are a must for protection too.
Under 16s: To comply with our insurance, volunteers under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult who will be asked to sign a parental / guardian consent form on the day by the beach clean organiser.

Event Details
Rural tourism makes a massive contribution to Scotland’s economy, including generating £1.2 billion from walking tourism alone, as well as improving the country’s social capital in terms of health and wellbeing. But many who live in rural communitie are not getting their fair share of the benefits.
Rural communities are suffering the downsides – congestion (with settlements on the NC500 particularly badly affected), litter, housing pressures, business closures and rural depopulation. Decades of under-investment in rural infrastructure have seen the deterioration or removal of ranger services, public toilets and rural roads. The Scottish Government recently stepped in with dedicated funding for visitor management but this is on an annual, one-off, basis whereas long-term investment is needed.
SEDA Land is running a conversation on how more of the fiscal and other benefits generated by visitors – tourists, day-trippers, dog-walkers, mountain-bikers and other extreme sports enthusiasts – to the countryside might be channelled back into the affected areas.
Recreation and enjoyment of the outdoors is also crucial for our health and wellbeing, with these benefits increasingly recognised in the growth of preventative medicine “green prescribing”. Given the contribution that outdoor pursuits make to our health, should we be looking at alternative sources of investment in their infrastructure and management, rather than simply seeing them as part of rural tourism? Given the potential savings to NHS Scotland’s £18bn-a-year budget we will also be looking at how some of the clawed-back funds might be redistributed to rural communities for investment in improving regional infrastructure and visitor management.
AIMS
- To develop a model for local distribution of funding for the infrastructure necessary for rural tourism and supporting better health.
- To give communities the skills and responsibilities to enable/empower them to respond to the growing needs of tourism and supporting better health.

Hundreds of people across the UK are taking action on the 24th March 2023 to demand their local government pension funds divest from crisis and invest in our future.
Join us on the 15th February to find out why, and how you can get involved.
Background
In the last year we have sat in the cold, unable to afford to heat our homes and watched in horror as the climate crisis intensified, with floods tearing through Pakistan, drought devastating the Horn of Africa and storms surging through the US, Japan and Mauritius.
The spiralling cost of living and the breakdown of the global climate are both symptoms of an unstable and unjust energy system, founded on fossil fuels.
This is one crisis; a fossil fuel crisis.
Investing in fossil fuels won’t keep us warm this winter – Investment in a sustainable future has never been more urgent.
Despite more than 75% of councils declaring a climate emergency, UK local authority pension funds pump over £10bn into highly polluting fossil fuels.
On Friday 24 March 2023, people across the UK will come together in town and city centres to demand our local institutions finally cut off the money pipeline to fossil fuel polluters and free up funds to invest in clean, cheap energy.
Will you join them?

Event Details
The Climate Action Fife project runs an informal forum for Fife based groups to share ideas on what works when talking about climate change, what resources you have found to work and what tools you need to keep/get the conversation going. The forum takes place every 2 months on the third Thursday of the month.
It’s a lunchtime session with some presentations and guided discussion as well as a chance to bounce ideas of some supportive Fife folk for your engagement plans.
It’s open to all community organisations – those that are climate change organisations, as well as those who work on other community issues, but want to include climate action/education in their day-to-day delivery.
Every meeting, we will have a different topic to guide our discussion.

Event Details
In July 2022, the Edinburgh Climate Action Network (ECAN) held its first event and kick-started a conversation about our shared vision for a “living city,” and the need for more joined-up thinking and action to make this vision happen.
This second ECAN event will build on the discussions that were started in July, create new and useful connections, and start building a network which can contribute towards the goals set out in these discussions.
Join us at the Grassmarket Community Project for a relaxed evening of food and drink, provided by their award-winning social enterprise cafe. Together we will celebrate what’s already happening across Edinburgh, create a map of our vision for a living city, and plan how a community network will support communities to make that future happen.
By coming to this event you will have the opportunity to:
- See an overview of community climate action happening all across Edinburgh
- Create useful partnerships and collaborations with like-minded groups
- Define ECAN’s priorities and activities, and how the network should be organised and led
- Be encouraged and inspired! Climate action is tough, and reminding ourselves that we are not working alone is essential.
Everyone is welcome to attend this event, whether you are an individual, you come from a community group, or from a different kind of organisation which would like to engage with and support community climate action. You do not have to represent a climate-focused group to attend this event. You only have to want a fairer, greener future for Edinburgh. In the interest of having a balance of all perspectives in the room, we ask that a maximum of 2 people from each group attends.
Financial support for transport and childcare are available for those who require it. Please specify if you need this in the registration form.

Most people who are gripped by fear, sadness, anger, confusion, powerlessness and other strong emotions are vulnerable to episodes of burnout or hopelessness. Strong emotions drive change and Earth and society are undoubtedly made better by compassionate people doing what they can to act on these issues. But constructive progress can often seem out of reach. At times like these making time for self care, and connecting with resilient peers, will be among the most effective ways to re-empower yourself to continue striving for the just and enlightened society you aim to help bring about.
Inspired by the spirit of Glasgow’s 2021 Climate Justice March and with a £10k grant from The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland – Together for Our Planet programme, EAR Peer Support is funded until March 2023.

The Oil Machine
Emma Davie | UK | 2022 | 72m | PG
The Oil Machine explores our economic, historical, and emotional entanglement with oil by looking at the conflicting imperatives around North Sea oil. This invisible machine at the core of our economy and society now faces an uncertain future as activists and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil?
By highlighting the complexities of how oil is embedded in our society – from high finance to cheap consumer goods – The Oil Machine brings together a wide range of voices from young activists, oil company executives, economists to pension fund managers and considers how this machine can be tamed, dismantled, or repurposed.

Are you concerned about climate change but not sure how urgent it is and how you can make a difference? Join in for a friendly, facilitated discussion to explore these questions.
Having quality conversations about climate change is one of the most effective things we can do to stop it.
We are hosting an introductory ‘Climate for Change’ conversation 22 February, 10am – 12:30pm. Open to all. Online.
The concept of SCCAN’s ‘Climate for Change’ conversations for newcomers is a bit like a Tupperware party, where – instead of being sold plastic boxes – an idea is communicated: how we can take action on climate change.
We draw on concerns we all have in the session – and allow space to address them and to let them grow into action.
Our trained facilitators understand we need more such conversations in Scotland and we’re hosting one online!
Please be on time (and stay until the end) so our volunteer facilitators can support a distraction-free conversation with time to catch up after, and so they don’t have to give up more of their time than they already are!
There’s no cost to attend the session. We will ask people to consider hosting their own ‘party’ – and build a movement of people who understand what needs to be done and what they can do!
Most Scots are concerned about climate change, but are uncertain / overwhelmed and unsure how to respond. Social research shows that through conversations with people we trust we make sense of confusing information and decide what to do about it.
Find out more about the Climate for Change Programme here: https://sccan.scot/climate-for-change/
The content isn’t really suitable for children, so this is an adult only event!
If you want to support our work but can’t come, please join SCCAN: https://sccan.scot/join/

Event Details
The climate crisis is one of the biggest threats to mental health, with research showing that 75% of young people believe that the future is frightening. As campaigners we are disproportionately aware of climate threats and how they affect people around the world, which can lead to burn-out, anxiety and other mental health issues.
In this training, climate psychologist Jessica Kleczka will cover how the climate crisis affects our mental health in different ways, and share coping strategies to maintain wellbeing and healthy boundaries as an activist.
Please note that the facilitator is not a mental health professional and the strategies outlined in this training are not a substitute for therapy. If you feel like you can’t cope with climate anxiety or other mental health issues, please seek professional help. Resources will be shared after the training.

Event Details
This workshop will be led by Dr Liz Lakin, a senior lecturer at the University of Dundee and the Academic Lead for the Living Lab at Dundee Botanic Garden.
Healthy soil is essential to produce the fruit, cereal and vegetables we eat. Soil also stores carbon by locking in greenhouse gases, helping to reduce our impact on climate change.
Knowing about soil and what it needs will help you produce bumper crops and vigorous plants. Learning to use natural improvement methods will save time and money, plus you will create a healthy habitat for thousands of different species of fungi, bacteria and invertebrates that in turn support and maintain your soil.
At the workshop we will learn about the different types of soil, why the chemistry of soil is important and do some testing. We’ll also discuss ways to improve your soil and give an overview of the important elements of a healthy soil.
* To get the best from the workshop please bring along a soil sample from your own garden or an area you use for growing. Place some soil in a medium sized jar, about 1/3, then fill up with water and leave to settle. Ideally, do this 2 weeks before.
About our tutor, Dr Liz Lakin: Trained originally as a school biology teacher, Liz continues her teaching and research in biology and environmental science at Dundee. She has a keen interest in all things to do with plants.
This event is suitable for beginners. Drinks will be provided. This will be an outdoor event with some shelter so please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather.

Greener Kirkcaldy’s Community Garden and Allotment is based with Ravenscraig Walled Garden. Go to https://what3words.com/tube.gloves.palace for directions the the garden gate.
The gates to the garden are located at the Dysart end of Ravenscraig park; on the corner of Dysart Road and West Quality Street. You will see gates entering into Ravenscraig Park. Just past these gates are two green metal gates beside a red brick wall – that is the entrance to Ravenscraig Walled Garden. Go through the green gates and follow the path around to your right past the car park. Keep to the right and you will see a big space with lots of allotments. If you look to the left, you will see a green ‘cabin’ with a polytunnel and raised beds. That is where we meet. If no-one there, people might be in our old plot – Go past the two flower beds on the left and you will see a green hedge in the left. Our community garden is behind the hedge on the left. It has a big brown shed on it.

Event Details
Did you know that the soil that we walk on and that we grow our food in is not just rocks and dirt, but a whole ecosystem? Soil is alive, it’s home to billions of micro organisms, invertebrates and other animals. The health of the soil is key to a healthy climate and a healthy food system. Join us in this workshop on soil health and composting as we learn how our soil supports us and how we can support our soil.
This workshop is led by Mark Hanlon, soil scientist at the James Hutton Institute in Dundee. We will look at the basics of soil science, soil remediation and how we can start healing our soils by composting.
How to get there:
The workshop will be held at Polmadie Plots in Toryglen. Polmadie Plots are located along the footpath between the Toryglen Asda, Polmadie Recycling place and Malls Mire woodland. To get there, follow the pedestrian path between Polmadie Road and Prospecthill Circus or the pedestrian path on Jessie Street towards Prospecthill Circus. SPRINGBOARD: Assembly for creative climate action
Scotland in 2045 will be a net-zero country, confident in a changed climate.
Society, communities, jobs and the economy will look very different in this greener, fairer, more equal country.
How do we create this new Scotland?
The transformation needs imagination, conversations, new ways of working.
SPRINGBOARD: Assembly for creative climate action will take place online from 27 February to 2 March 2023. We invite cultural, environmental and community organisations and individual practitioners, local authorities, businesses, charities, government and public organisations to work together to re imagine this new Scotland and to grasp the opportunities and overcome the challenges of the journey towards it. We want to engender and support collaboration between and across different sectors and different sorts of organisations to achieve the transformational,
systemic and national change required.
This is NOT a conference! Yes, there will be inspiring and informative talks and discussions with experts in climate change, culture and social change. But for most of the four-day assembly you’ll be working in a cross-sectoral ‘cohort’ discussing one of the following three questions and creating bold action plans:
- How do we accelerate the decarbonisation of the cultural sector?
- How can we collaborate for resilience?
- How can culture play its full role in the necessary transformation of society?
