How can we build enough people power to topple our current fossil-fuelled capitalist system? What are some creative ways to seize and create momentum in whirlwind moments? How can we absorb new people and energy into our groups and campaigns without burning out?
After great feedback from a similar event in November, this workshop will help reframe how we think about movement power and leave you with a practical toolkit and ideas for building momentum within the Stop Rosebank campaign and far beyond.
If you’d like to download or receive a free printed copy of the Movement Power booklet that accompanies this workshop, you can order one here from Tipping Point’s website.
When you sign up you’ll receive a confirmation and reminder email with a link to the zoom event. If you don’t receive these emails or have any other questions please email [email protected]

What is a Climate Café?
A climate café is a simple, hospitable, empathetic space where fears & uncertainties about our climate & ecological crisis can be safely expressed. The model is adapted from Death Cafés.
This one is for anyone aged 18 or over.
Why do we need Climate Cafés?
We need the kind of exploration that climate cafés provide as it becomes more evident that climate and ecological breakdown are not far-away problems but a clear and present danger to our own safety and wellbeing. People increasingly need to talk about what our changing world means for them in terms of impacts at personal, family and societal level. We need to imagine it in some detail so as to be able to think about it constructively and clear-sightedly, and to explore some complex feelings and thoughts which may often be taboo and hard to talk about.
What happens during a Climate Café?
The focus of discussion is participants’ thoughts and feelings about the climate and ecological crisis. There are no guest speakers and no talks, and it is an advice-free zone. Whilst the climate and ecological crisis is usually the main focus of the café we realise too, in these exceptional times, that COVID19 is another life-threatening preoccupation and needs a space to be explored – and this can happen here too.
This café will be led by trained facilitators.
A reminder email will be sent to registered participants in the week leading up to the café, followed by the Zoom link the day beforehand. Please check spam/junk folders and if you have any issues contact us at [email protected]

It is essential to have attended a climate café before undertaking this training. More detail below.
What is a Climate Café?
A Climate Café is a simple, hospitable, empathetic process that offers a space where fears and uncertainties about our climate crisis can be safely expressed, leading over time to greater emotional resilience and understanding.
We need the kind of exploration that Climate Cafés provide as it becomes more evident that climate change is not a far-away problem but a clear and present danger to our own safety and wellbeing. People increasingly need to talk about what our changing climate means for them in terms of impacts at personal, family and societal level. We need to imagine it in some detail so as to be able to think about it constructively and clear-sightedly, and to explore some complex feelings and thoughts which may often be taboo and hard to talk about.
The focus of discussion is participants’ thoughts and feelings about the climate crisis. There are no guest speakers and no talks, and it is an advice-free zone. This is psychologically important, helping to create the supportive atmosphere.
What is the purpose of this workshop?
Climate Psychology Alliance members are establishing climate cafés in communities across the UK, and we want to see them taking place in every location.
This workshop will support participants to develop the confidence to set up their own Climate Café. It will include a short taster climate café, the psycho-social principles on which Climate Cafés are based, building a toolkit of practical resources, and a discussion of the organisation and facilitation of Climate Cafés.
Are there any requirements to attend?
Yes. You do not need a therapeutic background to take this workshop but it is essential that you have attended a climate café as a participant before doing this training.
This will need to be a climate café that:
- focuses on feelings rather than action
- is clear that it is not a space for discussing or debating climate policy, climate science or climate action.
If you cannot get a place on one of ours, an internet search or a browse on Eventbrite should produce some. You can check with the organiser if it meets the criteria above or get in touch with us. Please do join our waiting lists as spaces regularly become available at short notice.
All our climate cafés are listed here.
Who is running it?
Rebecca Nestor, doctoral researcher at the Tavistock Centre, who has been facilitating Climate Cafés in Oxford for two years
Gillian Broad, professor of social work at the University of Sussex and an experienced facilitator of reflective groups including Climate Cafés.
When is it and how much does it cost?
Sat 11th Mar 14.00 – 17.00 GMT
Cost: £20 standard rate & £5 concessionary rate (for students and those on low income).
A reminder will be sent to registered participants leading up to the workshop and the Zoom link will be shared the day beforehand. Please check spam/junk folders.
If you have any problems please email [email protected]

What you will learn
CAT’s Zero Carbon Britain project offers the hard data and confidence required for visualising a future where we have risen to the demands of climate science. It helps to reduce fear and misunderstandings and open new, positive, solutions-focused conversations.
The new report published in 2019, Zero Carbon Britain: Rising to the Climate Emergency, incorporates the very latest developments in science and technology to show that we can create a zero carbon Britain using only proven technology.
During this two day course you will explore all aspects of climate solutions and scenarios presented in the research. Live lectures will cover a range of topics from renewable energy and energy efficiency to diets and land-use, looking at how these can work together to help us build a zero carbon future. Online workshops will enable discussion and debate among participants on catalysing action across all areas of society.
Some of the topics covered include:
- How we can provide a reliable energy supply for the UK with 100% renewable energy sources and flexible carbon neutral back up – without fossil fuels, nuclear power, or gambling on the promise of future technology.
- How we can grow the vast majority of the food we need for a healthy, low carbon diet, and manage our land to capture carbon, nurture biodiversity and increase the health and resilience of our ecosystems.
- How we can deliver a modern lifestyle, create employment, improve our wellbeing, and ensure that the future we leave for our children and generations to come is safe and sustainable.
- Understanding key barriers to change, and how we can overcome them – offering a range of other benefits in the process.
- How research can be used to support councils in developing climate emergency action plans.
The live, interactive nature of this course will offer a rich online learning experience. To get the most out of the course, we suggest you:
- Download the Zero Carbon Britain; Rising to the climate emergency, and read (at least) the 8-page executive summary and explore chapters relevant to your areas of work / expertise.
- Make a note of key questions, reflections and ideas for going forwards.

Getting your campaign message to the thousands of people in your community watching local TV or listening to a local radio station means you can reach far more people than you ever could in person. But, once you’re on the air, do you know what you’re going to say?
In this training, you’ll learn some techniques for getting your campaign message across effectively and have the opportunity to prepare through practice interviews, with the help and advice of UK Divest staff and other day of action organisers from across the UK.
We’ll be covering the basics around messaging and storytelling, to interview preparation, and non-verbal communication. Don’t worry if you’ve never done media interviews before!

Many people have an idea of what organic means but maybe unsure of how to put these principles in place.
Organic growing is more than just ‘growing without chemicals’. It is a holistic approach that works with natural processes to create an environment where your crops will thrive.
By the end of this talk, attendees will have developed a better understanding of their garden environment; how to apply organic methods so that their gardening activities are working with nature, rather than against it; and how to get the growing season off to a great start, so that you can reap the rewards of a healthy, organic growing space.
- Learn what we mean by organic and organic principles
- Learn the best ways to improve your soil health
- Learn how to recognise and attract beneficial wildlife
- Understand the impact of the resources used in your garden
- Learn how to address common pests and diseases organically

In this interactive workshop we’ll be talking about what community organisations can do to help reduce car use in their local area. We’ll cover greenhouse gas emissions in Scotland, to what extent transport contributes to this, and how we measure up globally. We’ll also talk about how to set up and develop an active travel project. This could be an initiative that will directly help people to get walking, wheeling and cycling, or a community action plan for encouraging sustainable travel in your area. We’ll also discuss the resources, funding and support that Sustrans can provide, and local group Aberdeen Cycle Forum will be talking about the work they do and how you can get involved.

This online workshop is for Fife-based community groups and community leaders who are not already engaging their communities on climate action, but who would like to start.
We will discuss the effects of climate change on Fifers, the action your communities could take and the benefits of doing so, and will share examples of what is already happening around Fife.
If you are reading this and thinking “climate change… that’s not something we talk about” then you are exactly the person we want to speak to!
Climate change impacts us all, so why not come and find out what your community could be doing to take action.
You do not have to know anything about climate change to take part. These workshops are not about knowing the answers, but rather about getting a conversation going, discovering answers and working together to make Fife a greener and fairer place to live.

This cafe will take place on Zoom, so please feel free to have some coffee or cake at home while you meet with us virtually.

A Climate Café is an opportunity to give ourselves time to sit, perhaps with a hot drink and a slice of cake, and describe our thoughts and feelings about the crises of our ecology.
