Event Details
This workshop will be led by Dr Liz Lakin, a senior lecturer at the University of Dundee and the Academic Lead for the Living Lab at Dundee Botanic Garden.
Making compost at home is an environmentally-friendly way of dealing with your kitchen and garden waste. You can easily make an excellent free soil improver, for your garden or pots, that you don’t need to transport or buy from the garden centre.
Come and join us for some fresh coffee or tea, which we can add to the composter! At the workshop we will discuss what space and equipment you need, then learn about the different types of materials you can put in to your compost bin to get a perfect mix.
Using your own compost helps reduce the need to use shop bought fertilisers, builds soil health, and make plants and soils more resilient to drought.
There will be a mixture of discussion and activities to ensure you go away inspired and confident to get started. We will also look at possible problems and what should and shouldn’t go in to give you the best chance of producing great compost.
About our tutor, Dr Liz Lakin: Trained originally as a school biology teacher, Liz continues her teaching and research in biology and environmental science at Dundee. She has a keen interest in all things to do with plants.
This event is suitable for beginners. Drinks will be provided. This will be an outdoor event with some shelter so please wear suitable outdoor clothing for the weather.

Travelling to Ravenscraig Walled Garden
Greener Kirkcaldy’s Community Garden and Allotment is based with Ravenscraig Walled Garden. Go to https://what3words.com/tube.gloves.palace for directions the the garden gate.
The gates to the garden are located at the Dysart end of Ravenscraig park; on the corner of Dysart Road and West Quality Street. You will see gates entering into Ravenscraig Park. Just past these gates are two green metal gates beside a red brick wall – that is the entrance to Ravenscraig Walled Garden. Go through the green gates and follow the path around to your right past the car park. Keep to the right and you will see a big space with lots of allotments. If you look to the left, you will see a green ‘cabin’ with a polytunnel and raised beds. That is where we meet. If no-one there, people might be in our old plot – Go past the two flower beds on the left and you will see a green hedge in the left. Our community garden is behind the hedge on the left. It has a big brown shed on it.
