SPRINGBOARD: Assembly for creative climate action
Scotland in 2045 will be a net-zero country, confident in a changed climate.
Society, communities, jobs and the economy will look very different in this greener, fairer, more equal country.
How do we create this new Scotland?
The transformation needs imagination, conversations, new ways of working.
SPRINGBOARD: Assembly for creative climate action will take place online from 27 February to 2 March 2023. We invite cultural, environmental and community organisations and individual practitioners, local authorities, businesses, charities, government and public organisations to work together to re imagine this new Scotland and to grasp the opportunities and overcome the challenges of the journey towards it. We want to engender and support collaboration between and across different sectors and different sorts of organisations to achieve the transformational,
systemic and national change required.
This is NOT a conference! Yes, there will be inspiring and informative talks and discussions with experts in climate change, culture and social change. But for most of the four-day assembly you’ll be working in a cross-sectoral ‘cohort’ discussing one of the following three questions and creating bold action plans:

Creative Scotland have very kindly funded a massive #ChoirsForClimate concert in Edinburgh on 5th March 2023! Admission will be free, with a collection at the end for environmental causes. We’ll be singing climate-related choral works from a wide variety of composers, including new works from the Choirs for Ecocide Law project.
We’re putting together a community choir to perform at this event. If you’re interested in singing in it, sign up at https://forms.gle/r1doJJ4QaiYxirar5 , and if you’re in a choir, please share with other members too. Rehearsals will be on the two previous Sunday afternoons, 19th and 26th Feb, and music and learning tracks will be available online – links will be sent in early February. All singers are welcome, no matter what your skill level! The choir will be led by a small group of professional singers, so you’ll have someone to sing along with.

How can we break our addiction to oil? Join us for a special screening of ‘The Oil Machine’ as we explore our economic, historical and emotional entanglement with fossil fuels by looking at the conflicting imperatives around North Sea oil & gas. This invisible machine at the core of our economy and society now faces an uncertain future as activists, citizens and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil?
The film brings together a wide range of voices – oil company executives and workers, economists, young activists, pension fund managers – and asks how this machine can be tamed, dismantled or repurposed.
With an expert panel discussion after the screening, featuring:
The film screening will happen at the Cinema Space, Edinburgh College of Art (ECA). To find the Cinema Space, enter ECA from Lauriston Place, walk to the ECA Cafe and walk straight through it, then follow the signs for the ‘ECA Cinema Space’.
14:30: Doors open
15:00 – 16:30: Film screening
16:30 – 17:00: Q&A with the panelists
Presented by the Edinburgh Earth Initiative, committed to accelerating the University of Edinburgh’s response to the climate crisis. Working with our academics, students, staff, and partners, we help ensure the University of Edinburgh is at the leading edge of climate research, teaching, innovation and action.

We will be participating and encouraging our members to join us in participating in the Fridays of the Future protest on the 24th/31st of March 2023 12noon to 14:00
We will join either a larger organised protest as the time for this is published (likely between 12 and 2 pm) within the city centre or in front of Marischal College.
Alternatively, we will advertise and attend a Fridays for the Future event on campus (similarly around 12-2pm). For this we would likely collaborate with other societies such as Amnesty International, as we have done before.
This event would take place outside of the Sir Duncan Rice Library or Old King’s College.
Bringing a sign would be recommended and much appreciated.
These events are open for anyone to join, as this issue affects us all.

The Amazon rainforest is under attack, mirroring our relationship with the planet as a whole.
Drawing on the work of the ‘Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures’ collective, this session will create a space to discuss and dive deeper into the denials which enable our colonial, violent and unsustainable ways of being.
It will be an attempt to open the possibility of developing a new relationship with ourselves and the more-than-human world we co-exist with.
No cost. Online event.

Doors at 7pm, come early to discover climate groups & activists operating across Scotland. Discussion will begin at 7.30pm.
For too long, representations of climate action in the mainstream media have been white-washed, green-washed and diluted to be made compatible with capitalism.
We are living in an economic system which pursues profit above all else; harmful, oppressive systems that heavily contribute to the climate crisis, and environmental consequences that have been toned down to the masses. Tackling the climate crisis requires us to visit the roots of poverty, capitalist exploitation, police brutality and legal injustice. Climate justice offers the real possibility of huge leaps towards racial equality and collective liberation as it aims to dismantle the very foundations of these issues. In her debut book, campaigner Mikaela Loach offers a fresh and radical perspective for real climate action that could drastically change the world as we know it for the benefit of us all.
Written with candour and hope, It’s Not That Radical will galvanise readers across generations to take action, offering an accessible and transformative appraisal of our circumstances to help mobilise a majority for the future of our planet.
Practical and urgent – this is a clarion call for transformation from the front lines of the fight for people and planet. I have no doubt It’s Not That Radical will become an indispensable toolkit for a new generation of activists – Naomi Klein
Come and celebrate with us – not just this phenomenal new book, but the possibilities it creates and the movement it is part of.

Climate Change is the greatest challenge of our time – affecting everything from geopolitics to economies to migration – but alongside the challenges come valuable opportunities to work together to transform our world and create a fairer and more just future for all. Navigating this complex web of choices and possibilities requires a truly global perspective, and Patricia Espinosa is perfectly placed to provide just this. Ambassador of Mexico to Germany since 2012, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico (2006–2012) and Executive Secretary of the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC, 2016–2022) she has been instrumental in efforts to make the Paris Agreement a reality and led crucial climate conversations at COP26 in Glasgow.
Ambassador Espinosa joins Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, for a fascinating conversation exploring Scottish, and global, efforts to face up to our climate emergency and guide us through the vital transition to a cleaner, fairer and sustainable future for everyone. With discussion of climate justice, the role of legislation, UN Sustainable Development Goals and how we mitigate the unfolding effects of a changing climate and more, this event will give fascinating insights into global politics and what the next steps on this critical journey need to be.
Venue and time to be confirmed.
