‘So, I’m stumped, can I ask you about deforestation, d’you think?’
STUMPED is a brand new one-act chamber opera by Lewis Coenen-Rowe, bringing together five old stories from varied times and places that are all united by a shared theme: what happens when you mess with trees.
Why do people keep coming back to this theme and what does it tell us about human history? Are these stories or a warning, or does that just sound stupid? Join two users of an internet forum as they explore their way through these stories and wonder what they have to tell us about our relationship with forests today.
This world premiere performance brings together a phenomenal cast of musicians including singers Shuna Sendall and Lea Shaw and instrumentalists Alice Rickards, Sonia Cromarty, Andrew Connell-Smith and Robyn Anderson, conducted by Thomas Butler. Artistic direction by Cecilia Stinton and scenography by Hunter Muir.
The performance will be preceded by a discussion with leading experts on trees, forests and how these have been interpreted by human art and storytelling, including artist and forester Amy Clarkson, researcher Dr Ophira Gamliel, and Sally Clark from the campaign Biofuelwatch. There will also be opportunities to learn about local environmental groups and how they are helping to preserve and restore our local natural heritage.
Tickets are available at £15 on a pay-what-you-can basis. Please purchase tickets for either the 6pm or the 8.15pm performance. All tickets include the discussion with invited speakers taking place at 7pm.
Accessibility
The venue is wheelchair accessible. If you have access requirements, please share these using the question box when booking your tickets. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact us.
STUMPED is funded by the Creative Scotland Open Fund.

Join us for our activist gathering in Glasgow to hear stories of community action for global justice from Colombia to Scotland. Whether fighting to protect the sacred land and water of local communities in Colombia, fighting to stop new oil extraction in the North Sea, or calling for an international treaty to end fossil fuels, activists know that taking power away from corporations is vital for climate justice.
Get inspired by the stories from young activists, and learn and plan what action you can take locally in solidarity.
Come and hear about Global Justice Now’s latest campaigns in Scotland and how you can get involved with…
There will also be a free lunch, from the fabulous Soul Food Sisters collective, and plenty of opportunity to meet and talk with other local activists as well as the staff of Global Justice Now Scotland.
Speakers include:
Trade campaigner Cleodie Rickard, who recently visited Colombia in solidarity with local activists there who are fighting open cast mines that have devastated lives, health and sacred spaces. Mining giants like Glencore are now resorting to secret tribunals in investment treaties to sue the Colombian government for blocking further damage.
Michael Poland, Campaign Director of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. Michael helped set up the campaign for this international treaty to phase out fossil fuels in 2019, and has supported climate justice campaign and strategies to scale, online and offline, for over a decade.
Izzie McIntosh, climate campaigner at Global Justice Now, will talk about the campaign to make big polluters pay for the damage they’re causing while profiting from the climate emergency, and the UK-wide day of action in September.
Directions: the easiest way to get to the Quaker Meeting House from Queen Street/the city centre is to take the low level trains from Queen Street to Charing Cross. Trains run every 10 minutes or so, and take just 2 minutes. The Quaker meeting house is just 2 minutes from Charing Cross station.
Walking from Queen Street to the Quaker Meeting House takes about 15 minutes walking uphill.
Disabled access: a parking spot and access from the back is available for those who are unable to use the stairs. Please contact us if you need to use this.

From 15-17 Sep, millions of people around the world will take to the streets to take action for the climate and against the harmful impacts of the fossil fuel industry.
Please join speakers from Biofuelwatch and The Stop Burning Trees Coalition to find out about the many ways you can get involved in taking action to bring an end to dirty energy during the Global Fight to End Fossil Fuels Weekend of Action.
The climate crisis is escalating and in response so is the global movement for climate justice. Across the globe, we are coming together to fight back against the fossil fuel industry and its enablers. An end to fossil fuels cannot mean moving towards burning trees. Fossil fuel burning and tree burning are two sides of the same coin – all designed to allow energy companies to continue profiting at the expense of people and the planet.
Join us to find out how we can take action together to end dirty energy for good and help ensure a fossil-free future that will benefit people and the planet.

Make Polluters Pay Action Day is on 23rd September and campaigners across Scotland and the UK will be playing their part
in highlighting the injustice that is the climate crisis, and the need to make polluters pay for climate induced loss and damage.
Generally, the most severe impacts of climate change are being experienced by low-income countries: those which have
contributed the least to the climate crisis and are least equipped to mitigate its effects. Often the losses these countries experience cannot be recovered, for example loss of life or cultural sites. Damage, such as to houses and infrastructure, can be repaired but this costs money, with those most affected expected to foot the bill. This is loss and damage from climate change.
This is your opportunity to do something creative to get the attention of your community, local media, or local policy makers. You could for example, organise a pilgrimage, a craftivism workshop, a discussion event, or something else entirely! There are some helpful guides with advice on how to organise an action MPP Action Day (makepolluterspay.co.uk) and a blog about getting involved in Scotland.
We also feel that this an important moment to contact Scottish policymakers therefore on behalf of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland members, Christian aid has put together this guide featuring lots of ways you can call on decision makers to act – please add your voice and help us to raise awareness of this vital issue.
It is time to Make Polluters Pay! If you have questions or want some advice on getting involved, please contact Lucy le Roux at Christian Aid at [email protected]

Are you concerned about climate change but not sure how urgent it is and how you can make a difference? Join in for a friendly, facilitated discussion to explore these questions in a short one-off session.
Having quality conversations about climate change is one of the most effective things we can do to stop it.
The concept of SCCAN’s ‘Climate for Change’ conversations for newcomers is a bit like a Tupperware party, where – instead of being sold plastic boxes – an idea is communicated: how we can take action on climate change.
We draw on concerns we all have in the session – and allow space to address them and to let them grow into action.
Our trained facilitators understand we need more such conversations in Scotland and we’re hosting one online!
Please be on time (and stay until the end) so our volunteer facilitators can support a distraction-free conversation with time to catch up after, and so they don’t have to give up more of their time than they already are!
There’s no cost to attend the session – although you can contribute a small donation if you wish. We will ask people to consider hosting their own ‘party’ – and build a movement of people who understand what needs to be done and what they can do!
Most Scots are concerned about climate change, but are uncertain / overwhelmed and unsure how to respond. Social research shows that through conversations with people we trust we make sense of confusing information and decide what to do about it.

We’re so excited to invite you all again to join us on Saturday, the 30th of September to our second Meanwhile In Leith festival!
With that being said, we have sad news and good news to share from the Meanwhile Site. First the sad news; we will be saying goodbye to the space that’s been our home for the last 2,5 years by the end of October. The Meanwhile Site is getting developed and our wee garden has to go. BUT here’s the good news: We’re not leaving without a bang! We have all been working hard to come up with a festival lineup that resembles the joy and community that has been created here over the last years! So, for one last time, we’re celebrating our wonderful community at the Meanwhile Site, a shared community space between Leith Community Growers, Out of the Blue, local artists, Rowanbank Environmental Arts & Education, and Leith DIY. We want to create a day for all of Leith to share the joy of growing, nature, culture and community. The day will be full of fun workshops, creative drop-in sessions, live music and local stallholders; from a capoeira performance to parkour and skate workshops, learning the basics of bread making, and creative plant ID sessions – we’ve got you covered.
Join us from 12 pm to celebrate the Meanwhile Site. Entrance to the festival is free of charge, however, some workshops require booking in advance. We are family and dog-friendly.
See you soon at the Meanwhile Site!

No one will feel the impacts of the climate emergency more than children and future generations.
Join us for this Green Tease on intergenerational climate justice and culture on the 11 October 4-6pm at Leith Community Croft. Together with experts in climate justice and creative climate education, we will discuss what intergenerational climate justice is, why it matters and how culture can be a way of giving a voice to future generations.
Children and future generations are at the forefront of bearing the burdens of the climate crisis. Still, they have little say over the decisions that will affect them more than anyone. Intergenerational justice argues that children have the right to be heard. That the climate crisis is a human rights issue and that climate action must reflect the needs and voices of everyone impacted. The complex interaction of the climate crisis with existing inequalities and injustices is an area where the arts and cultural sector can play a role in developing understanding and breaking down barriers to children participating in climate action.
An excellent example of this comes from one of our speakers Lucy Power, Co-director at Rowanbank Environmental Arts & Education. In the run up to COP26 they facilitated the creation of a beautiful and moving soundscape of children’s voices that you can listen to here: Positive Imaginings Soundscape.
This event will partly take place outdoors so do bring warm, waterproof clothes. We provide tea and coffees to warm ourselves with!
Speakers:
Dr Elizabeth Cripps
Dr Elizabeth Cripps is a Senior Lecturer in Political Theory at the University of Edinburgh and Associate Director of CRITIQUE: Centre for Ethics and Critical Thought. Liz researches and teaches climate justice and ethics. Her most recent books are What Climate Justice Means and Why We Should Care and Parenting on Earth: A Philosopher’s Guide to Doing Right By Your Kids – and Everyone Else. She also has a PhD in Philosophy from University College London and a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford.
2050 Climate Group
Since 2014, 2050 Climate Group has been working to empower Scotland’s Young Leaders to lead action on tackling our climate crisis. Meet Laura Curtis-Moss and Alyson MacKay, who will share their work with intergenerational justice.
Lucy Power
Lucy Power is a Co-director of Rowanbank Environmental Arts and Education. Lucy has a background in environmental science and aerial performance art and steers the creative focus and output of the organisation. Together with Arran Sheppard she runs Positive Imaginings, a creative climate education project based on woodland performances, providing children an opportunity to imagine a positive future in the midst of the climate emergency. Positive Imaginings uses storytelling to empower and engage children in building hope and resilience for their future. Read our case study about the project here. Lucy has also been awarded a Churchill Fellowship to research best practice in creative climate communication and education from around the world.
About the Green Tease
Green Tease is an ongoing informal events programme connecting cultural practices and environmental sustainability across Scotland. Since 2013 Green Tease has provided a platform for those interested in teasing out the links between the arts, climate change and environmental sustainability through the exchange of ideas, knowledge and practices. Green Tease events are equally open to people from creative and environmental backgrounds and free to attend.

The first ever EMEN Environment Conference is coming to Glasgow!
The event takes place on Thursday 12th October 2023, at Trades Hall. The event will run from 10am to 5pm.
This is the first time we have hosted an autumn conference and will be delighted if you were able to attend. Our key themes for 2023 are energy (with a focus on heating buildings), transport (with a focus on cycling), and how we can mobilise community climate action. We view all of these themes through the lens of a Just Transition, and how we can create a fairer, greener and more prosperous Scotland for all.
Join us to hear from expert speakers, grassroots activists, academics, and politicians – and have your voice heard, as we seek to build a fairer, cleaner, greener Scotland.
EMEN – the Ethnic Minority Environmental Network – is facilitated by CEMVO Scotland, and funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust.

Join us for this event about climate and social justice activism.
Much of the global economy is based on exploiting cheap labour and the environment, benefitting the wealthy and corporations while perpetuating poverty in the global south. This systemic injustice is also evident in the way the climate crisis has been caused by the rich world and effects those in the global south worst. Our speakers will discuss the origins of this neo-colonial system, the rules which prop it up and how we can collectively change it!
We will hear from:
📣 Dorothy Guerrero, head of policy at Global Justice Now
📣 Mohammed Elnaiem, Decolonial Centre
📣 Liz Murray, Global Justice Now Scotland and Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty
If you are interested in Global Justice Youth, you can join our local Edinburgh group! We meet regularly and always welcome new people. Please get in touch with leelou.go[email protected] if you would like to get involved.

Feeling hopeless in the face of the gloomy headlines? This
Feeling hopeless in the face of the gloomy headlines?
This is the Festival for you.
War has scarred the 21st Century and the world is careering towards an even more precarious position. The rising potential for nuclear calamity fuses with another existential threat: human-induced catastrophic climate change and ecocide.
These threaten the very habitat we rely on.
Instead of diverting efforts towards the green infrastructure required to sustain all life, yet more resources are thrown into the war machine. Today’s nuclear bombs are many times more destructive than those dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
They represent the end of all species and life itself.
All of the nuclear states including India and China are developing new weapons while the non-nuclear powers create new pressure towards disarmament through the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The movement for nuclear disarmament is needed now more than at any time since the height of the Cold War. In Scotland, we have a special responsibility to rise to that challenge.
Removal of nuclear warheads from Faslane and Coulport would dismantle the British nuclear weapons system and prove that nuclear states can be disarmed. The world is watching.
The “Festival For Survival” will bring together international speakers, campaigners, creative artists and activists.
Let’s discuss how we can build a movement for nuclear disarmament, peace, the environment, and climate justice.
A mix of lectures, plenaries, workshops and cultural exhibits will bring hundreds of people together to discuss how we can make another world possible.
One Planet. Twin Threats.
Scotland Must Act.
