Event Details
If you’re a councillor or candidate who is passionate about delivering climate action for your local community, join this event to find out what you can do to secure climate friendly pensions.
Background
The science is clear: the climate crisis is here. Millions of people are already facing the destructive consequences of a warming world and the IPCC’s most recent report is a reality check that it’s going to get much worse unless we take urgent action to cut emissions.
Despite more than 75% of councils declaring a climate emergency, UK local authority pension funds still invest around £10bn in highly polluting fossil fuels.
Councillors can play a crucial role in the transition to a zero-carbon future by supporting an end to investment in fossil fuels. Whether you are a candidate for election, or a sitting councillor not up for election, join us on the 2nd May to find out more.
Event details
The webinar will feature a series of short presentations on;
• Why ending fossil fuel investment is a financially prudent thing to do — by Mark Campanale, founder of Carbon Tracker, the world-leading green financial think tank. Mark’s influential work has been described in the New Yorker as ‘turning the financial world’s view of climate upside down’.
• How councillors in the UK have led on climate action in their pension fund, and how you can too.
The event is open to all candidates running in the May 2023 local elections, sitting councillors, union reps who are represented on local government pension boards, and local government staff in any position.
Whether you are new to this topic or have pursued it before, on your pension fund committee or not, in leadership or in opposition, we hope the event will be insightful for you.

Event Details
Offshore is an independent documentary that brings together varying perspectives on working in offshore oil and gas and renewable energy – and explores what the coming energy transition means for workers and communities around the UK North Sea.
The film looks at how communities and regions have been impacted by past industrial decline, the risks workers face in an increasingly precarious industry and how they can organise for the future.
The climate crisis means we must rethink our energy systems: where we get energy from, how it’s produced and who benefits from it. Workforces and communities all over the UK will be impacted by the energy transition and have the potential to benefit from more publicly owned, local and renewable energy.
Hot drinks will be provided between 7-7.30pm. The running time is 20 mins and there will be time for a discussion after the screening. Feel free to bring food and snacks to the event as we are only serving hot drinks. You may also wish to bring a cushion and/or blankets as it may be more comfortable for sitting on the chairs and benches in the café.
This event is supported by funding provided by the Highland Community Waste Partnership.
NB: One requirement of the funding is that we collect feedback from participants about the event. You will be asked to fill out a feedback form at the end of the session.
Photography: We will also take photographs during the session for sharing on social media and reporting purposes. By signing up, you are giving consent to having your photo taken. If you are not comfortable having your photograph taken, please let us know.
Attendance & cancellation policy: Please only book a ticket if you know you are able to attend. If your plans change, you must cancel your ticket and let us know with at least 48 hours notice of the event start time so that others can attend.

As communities around the world face ever increasingly extreme weather events and our cost of living spirals out of control, millions of workers are on strike against pay cuts, appalling conditions, attacks on pensions and against factory closures. This wave of industrial action is not just happening in Britain but across the world.
The Climate Justice Coalition Trade Union Caucus invites you to join We Make Tomorrow: The Crisis is Global, So Is Our Movement – an international online rally bringing together union leaders and rank and file activists from France, Italy, Nigeria, New York, Taiwan and Ecuador to discuss how we can build workers power on climate and crisis.

Event Details
As the Oil Capital of Europe, Aberdeen is uniquely situated to consider the impacts of the fossil fuel industry on marine life and the local community.
Our oceans are rich, productive ecosystems providing homes to a huge variety of animals and plants and playing an essential role in supporting the health and wellbeing of the UK’s population, our livelihoods, and helping to tackle the climate crisis.
Due to the oil and gas developments happening far offshore , their impact has mostly been out of sight, and thus out of mind for all except those directly involved. However, these developments continue to pose a serious risk to marine ecosystems and the effective protection of the UK’s seas and marine protected areas. The groundbreaking new research report, In Deep Water, a collaboration between Uplift and Oceana lays out these impacts.
At this event at Aberdeen Arts Centre on May 10th, we will be discussing the findings of the research and the need for a just transition to an energy system that is cleaner and safer for people, climate and the ocean.
Come along for a screening of three short films about a Just Transition for Aberdeen, and a friendly discussion about the Rosebank oil field and the marine impacts of oil and gas drilling. This event is open to everyone, the venue is wheelchair accessible and snacks will be provided.

Event Details
All are welcome to register for this exciting online event, where Simon Sharpe will present his very recently [CUP] published book “Five Times Faster: Re-thinking the Science, Economics and Diplomacy of Climate Change”.
Policy insider Simon will outline how he thinks some of the most dominant and prevailing ideas need review and how he feels institutions are mis-advising governments. He will also comment on questions posed by scientists and on the Paris Agreement (which he calls the greatest public relations gamble in history).
Dr Clive Mitchell (NatureScot) will then respond to his presentation and engage in facilitated discussion before Q&A between the audience and panel.
Speaker and Panel Biographies
Simon Sharpe is Director of Economics for the UN Climate Champions Team, and a Senior Fellow at the World Resources Institute. He was previously Deputy Director of the UK government’s COP26 Unit, where he led international campaigns on energy, transport, land use, science and innovation. His other roles in government included leading international climate change strategy, developing the approach to clean growth in the UK’s industrial strategy, and serving as head of private office to Ministers of State for Energy and Climate Change. He also served on diplomatic postings to China and India. Simon has published academic papers on climate change science and economics, and policy reports on climate change risk assessment, economics, and diplomacy.
DR CLIVE MITCHELL FRSA HonFRSGS is Strategic Resource Manager at NatureScot. Clive allocates resources for NatureScot’s priorities on nature and climate change, and leads thinking on how to tackle the coupled emergency at the pace and scale required. Clive also lectures for the Open University on final year course on Earth System Sciences and the environment. He was an Observer for the OU at COP26. Clive sits on WWF Scotland’s Advisory Group, the steering group for the Sustainable Scotland Network and was in 2019 made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. He also, now some years ago, worked for the Sustainable Development Commission.

Why we need a People’s Health Assembly
We are in a new era of a socio-ecological polycrisis, with the climate emergency being ignored and the lives and wellbeing of millions being cast aside as we face a crushing cost-of-living crisis. There is brilliant work being done across civil society to improve the health and wellbeing of our society, but too much is focused on survival, rather than giving people alternatives and the ability to thrive. We are caught in a cycle of paying to fix what we continue to break.
We must come together to energise a paradigm shift from the grassroots and unanimously advocate systems change to support health and wellbeing of people and planet as our core aims, rather than an outdated, misguided and unfair focus on economic growth and finances.
PHMS wants to start this paradigm shift by bringing people together for a People’s Health Assembly (PHA) in 2023. The 2023 PHA will recognise the failures of current and past approaches, but more importantly highlight the breadth and depth of positive alternatives.
Scotland has its own rich tapestry of activism focused on the global, the national and the local, as well as networks of support for communities and individuals. Yet these efforts lack synergy, leading to a loss of effectiveness. We will focus on the processes of social movement building and grassroots activism in shifting from ‘surviving & coping’ (some better than others) to ‘systems change’. In bringing our voices together we hope to re-ignite solidarity in the face of detached politics.
Without a civic society movement that can highlight the positive alternatives available in policy and practice to the current neoliberal ‘common sense’ of austerity and ‘trickle down’ incompetence, the future of Scotland, independent or otherwise, is appallingly bleak. Informed critical democratic engagement is the only vaccine that can hope to address the pandemic of ‘truth decay’ that is already undermining the fundamental rights of the most vulnerable in our society and threatening the existence of future generations.
If another well-meaning event on health inequalities or climate fills you with dread or apathy, please think again! The ineffectiveness of current responses and resultant worsening outcomes can only be reimagined by a positive and united civil society.
A short history of PHAs
PHAs are based on the model of events run by PHM Global, with the last of these global PHAs taking place in 2018. The previous PHA event in Scotland was held in Edinburgh in 2014. Since then, PHMS have run other regular events and published a People’s Health Manifesto for local and national elections. Our latest report follows a recent inquiry into health inequalities in light of the COVID pandemic: All in this Together? The Impact of Covid-19 on Health Inequalities in Glasgow.

The People’s Health Movement (PHM) Scotland are a diverse group of health and social activists based in Scotland who are members of a global movement that calls for a right to health for all.
