Creative Scotland have very kindly funded a massive #ChoirsForClimate concert in Edinburgh on 5th March 2023! Admission will be free, with a collection at the end for environmental causes. We’ll be singing climate-related choral works from a wide variety of composers, including new works from the Choirs for Ecocide Law project.
We’re putting together a community choir to perform at this event. If you’re interested in singing in it, sign up at https://forms.gle/r1doJJ4QaiYxirar5 , and if you’re in a choir, please share with other members too. Rehearsals will be on the two previous Sunday afternoons, 19th and 26th Feb, and music and learning tracks will be available online – links will be sent in early February. All singers are welcome, no matter what your skill level! The choir will be led by a small group of professional singers, so you’ll have someone to sing along with.
If you’d like to know more, contact Chris on [email protected]mail.com .

About SCOTLAND: The Big Picture
In order to meet the growing challenges of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss, we need to see The Big Picture. Rewilding reaches beyond simply protecting species or habitats within nature reserves or protected areas and instead, seeks to transform Scotland’s land and seas so that they work for nature, climate and people.
What is rewilding?
For us, rewilding is an evolving process of nature recovery that leads to restored ecosystem health, function and completeness.
Our view of rewilding is built around these principles:

Working with a range of local Councils, we have developed a two day, interactive, online course offering an in-depth look at CAT’s flagship research project, Zero Carbon Britain. Connect with a network of others working and studying in the field and explore the radical changes needed to rise to the climate challenge.
We’re offering a limited number of free places to our Zero Carbon Britain: Live online course to help support those that would be otherwise unable to attend.
CAT’s Zero Carbon Britain project offers the hard data and confidence required for visualising a future where we have risen to the demands of climate science. It helps to reduce fear and misunderstandings and open new, positive, solutions-focused conversations.
The new report published in 2019, Zero Carbon Britain: Rising to the Climate Emergency, incorporates the very latest developments in science and technology to show that we can create a zero carbon Britain using only proven technology.
During this two day course you will explore all aspects of climate solutions and scenarios presented in the research. Live lectures will cover a range of topics from renewable energy and energy efficiency to diets and land-use, looking at how these can work together to help us build a zero carbon future. Online workshops will enable discussion and debate among participants on catalysing action across all areas of society.
The live, interactive nature of this course will offer a rich online learning experience. To get the most out of the course, we suggest you:
Paul is Knowledge and Outreach Coordinator for Zero Carbon Britain. He has been a member of the Wales Science Advisory Council (2010), board member of the International Forum for Sustainable Energy (2008) and a Climate Change Commissioner for Wales (2007). He holds an Honours degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and has been at CAT since 1988.

Join Scotland: The Big Picture’s NextGen team for a series of webinars and workshops exploring what rewilding could mean for Scotland’s environments.
Each month we will share information, resources and stories about rewilding in Scotland. We will focus on a different ecosystem each month, taking a closer look at the processes that underpin nature restoration in different places.
The webinars will take place online between 19:00 – 20:00 and will be available to watch after the event. There will be opportunities to ask questions and take part in discussion.
Each webinar will be unique and offer different perspectives from young people in our NextGen team, discovering what rewilding means to them and how you can get involved.

This is the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s smallest reserve and is located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, near to Edinburgh Castle, a 10-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley train station.
What to expect:
During this free two-hour training session aimed at youth work practitioners, you will spend time participating in a variety of creative outdoor activities that Rowanbank facilitate with the young people they work with.
You will enjoy foraged seasonal tea made on the fire, make some bread, sky gaze in hammocks hung from the trees and tell stories.
We will talk about climate change and biodiversity loss, and how to manage the complex emotions associated with this.
There will also be time to ask questions about Rowanbank’s work, network and share best practice with each other.
We hope these activities will inspire and give you the confidence and knowledge to undertake creative outdoor learning with your own groups of young people, whether you’re based in an urban or rural environment, with minimal resources and no matter your experience.
Spaces are limited so please sign up for your FREE space early to avoid disappointment.
Additional information:
This event will be held entirely outdoors. In the case of bad weather, participants will be informed and we will move the training indoors at a central Edinburgh location.
Please be mindful that there are no public toilets on site with Waverley station being the closest facilities a 10-minute walk away.
You do not require any previous experience of outdoor learning to take part and we encourage participation from practitioners who are curious to learn more and who are prepared to get stuck in to these hands-on activities!
Please bring: Warm and waterproof clothing, appropriate footwear, and an optional hot water bottle, blanket and flask of hot water for story time!
This training event is being delivered by YouthLink Scotland as part of Scotland’s Young People’s Forest, in partnership with Young Scot. The mission of the panel is to create and regenerate native Scottish forests, which are accessible to all, to help combat the current climate emergency, promoting and connecting education, wildlife, and well-being.

This 2 day workshop will introduce the principles of permaculture design and answer the question ‘What is Permaculture?’ and will inspire the next generation of designers in the heart of Leith who want to reimagine and redesign for a sustainable future.
Put simply, permaculture is about people living in a truly sustainable way, and permaculture design is about creating sustainable habitats for people, crops, animals and wildlife.
Permaculture is a highly transferable design process based on the laws of ecology. By studying natural ecosystems we try to learn how nature can be so abundant, efficient and stable. Permaculture uses the same principles to create sustainable, highly productive habitats.
Some aspects of permaculture have been practised for thousands of years, while others are new. The name was coined and popularised by Bill Mollison in the 1970s, when he wrote a number of books on PERMAnent agriCULTURE, which over time has developed into the wider notion of creating a PERMAnent CULTURE. (https://nonstuff.co.uk/permaculture-3/what-os-oermaculture/)
NonStuff Industries is a Community Interest Company with the following aims:
Like many, we’re working towards a truly sustainable society. However, we’re interested in a truly sustainable society that is also having a good time, because “If it’s not fun, it’s not sustainable” (Guy Dauncey).
Leith Community Growers believe everybody should have access to the resources needed to grow their own food for their families and community if they choose to and we aim to support and enable community based projects to make locally grown produce and green community spaces available to all.
We aim to create a growing community in Leith which is inclusive of all sections of the community regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability or any other identifying factors, and in particular those who may feel under-represented in such community groups, such as people of Black and ethnic minority backgrounds and those for whom English is an additional language.
We seek to remove the barriers to participation by providing free or affordable access to materials where possible and encouraging mutual support such as seed swapping and resource sharing.

Climate Week North East is 10 days packed full of fun, inspiring and interesting events, designed to raise awareness of climate change but, more importantly, show what we can all do to make a difference and reduce our carbon footprint, live sustainably and increase biodiversity in a fun way. It occurs every March, with events on throughout Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. The next Climate Week North East is on 24th March – 2nd April 2023.
Events in Climate Week North East differ each year but generally include family fun days, guided walks and bike rides, upcycling events, tours, wild meadow making, workshops and discussions, conferences, litter picks, films and talks, craft and story sessions, information drop ins and challenges.
We welcome any events that have as their focus how you are or we can reduce carbon emissions, live sustainably and increase biodiversity. If you have an event you would like to put on during CWNE even if it’s simply to showcase what you currently are doing, then get in touch at [email protected]
Check out our past CWNE brochures to gain inspiration or simply see what type of events have taken place previously. For up to the moment information on our events and what is going on locally see our facebook page.

On 25th of March 11:00 – 13:00, we’ll be having a pollinator expert in The Secret Garden who will talk about the importance of pollinators and how climate change is impacting them.
As you may know, we’re starting a pollinators project (a continuation of Bugtropolis) in which we will be building some beehives and bee houses for solitary bees and bumblebees, but also making wildflower patches and creating suitable environments for butterflies!
So, this day we’ll start making some houses with the guidance of the expert!
The event will take place in The Secret Garden 11am, next to the Butchart Centre, on University Road (it’s on Google Maps!). Don’t hesitate to contact us if you’re unsure about the location.
The event is open to everyone! Adults, children, students, non-students… even pets!
Access to The Secret Garden is via a dust/gravel car park (off University Road).

With the spring equinox just past, it’s the perfect time to think about what you might like to grow this year. Saving your own seeds and swapping them with your local community can help you save money on seeds and is a great way to contribute to biodiversity and multispecies wellbeing in cities. Plants grown from locally saved seeds adapt to their specific conditions and are more resilient to climate change than most industrially produced seeds.
But many of us living in the city don’t have much space to grow. So in this introductory workshop we will explore growing from seed to seed in small spaces, like on window sills, in pots and containers, and in community gardens. We will spend the morning exploring the community garden at the Meanwhile Site, learning some basics of urban community seed saving and garden planning, and we might even sow some seeds together.
Dress for the weather. No experience necessary, all curiosity welcome! If you have any questions feel free to get in touch with Hannah at [email protected] or [email protected]

Can one footprint imprint on our collective consciousness and create change? A walk; a pilgrimage, an odyssey…for the planet.
Five hundred miles from London to Glasgow: Eight weeks, 56 days and more than 56 host organisations, over a thousand walkers and thirty rolls of 16mm celluloid film.
More than a year ago, when delegates were heading to Glasgow on private jets to attend the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP), a group of people embarked on a radically different and much slower pilgrimage; an emotionally charged 56 day journey on foot from London and Bristol to Glasgow. Benjamin Wrigley’s Of Walking On Thin Ice captures this entrancing act of resistance in gritty home developed celluloid.
In celebration of this moving account of embodied activism, we invite people to join us in retracing the last five miles of the original Camino to COP26. Our final destination will be Civic House, where the walkers will share a communal meal before the film is screened for the first time in Glasgow. The event will also include a screening of The Ghost Forest (John Davies, 2021), following a group of indigenous leaders and activists from the Amazon on their journey to visit a rare and last remnant of rainforest habitat in Scotland.
After the screening local artists and activists Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich will be in conversation with Of Walking on Thin Ice director Benjamin Wigley about ideas of path making, community action, non-violent resistance and protests as the harvest of a change in public imagination. The conversation will be led by artist and curator Ane Lopez (A+E Collective).
Whether or not you join the walk, all ticket holders are welcome to join us for hot food from 3pm. Go to the GSFF box office at Civic House to claim your meal voucher. For more details on the walk, and how to register, please follow this link.

Come and be a part of this afternoon in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh where we through creative and scientific means will explore the role of trees in the climate crisis and biodiversity collapse.
Plants have always traversed seas, intentionally and inadvertently. At this event we will get a chance to experience the exhibition In Shipping Roots, by Keg de Souza that explores how plants have moved through the British Empire including eucalyptus, prickly pear and many seedlings which came to the UK in sheep fleeces. The exhibition highlights the role of art in linking the story of plants, history, and people in a physical space, opening up dialogues and imaginaries that are critical in finding solutions to the climate crisis.
This event will also include a guided walk by Dr Max Coleman, Science Communicator for the Botanics who will talk us through how and why a shift to natural regeneration is positive for plants and planet. Finally, we will hear from James McDougall, Carbon Manager for the Woodland Trust Scotland, who will speak on sustainable carbon management and tree planting in Scotland followed by an open discussion.
Programme:
14.00: Meet in front of Inverleith House
14.10: Introduction
14.30: Exhibition tour by Keg de Souza and Emma Nicolson
15.00: Guided walk by Dr Max Coleman
15.30: Break with coffee and tea
15.40: Presentation on carbon management and tree planting by James McDougall at Botanics Cottage Professors Room
16.00: Discussion and networking
17.00: Thank you for today!
About our speakers
Dr Max Coleman
Max Coleman has had an interest in trees for as long as he can remember. It was the tree collection at Kew Gardens in London, near where he grew up, that stimulated his interest in botany. He worked for a number of years in nature conservation, and this developed an interest in natural forests and the processes that operate within them. As a science communicator he aims to make plant science accessible and engaging.
Emma Nicolson
Emma Nicolson, Head of Creative Programmes was appointed to RBGE in December 2018. She formerly served as founding director of ATLAS Arts based in the Isle of Skye and spent three years as a senior manager for Australia’s Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. Emma has been actively involved in the arts for over twenty years working with leading cultural institutions across the world.
James McDougall
The Woodland Trust Scotland wants the Scottish Government to increase planting targets of native species. At this event James McDougall, Woodland Trust’s carbon manager will outline how the Woodland Trust monetarise carbon and provide a case study of a good example of sustainable tree planting.

Astronomer Royal and former President of the Royal Society, Lord Martin Rees is an eminent voice in the debate about climate change and the future of humanity. At no other point in history have we had such advanced knowledge and technology to determine the future of our planet.
In this talk, Lord Rees takes a radical look at the scientific establishment and shows how science is not just for scientists but can make a better world – for everyone.

Emerging research has shown that seaweed could be the safe and sustainable solution to the world’s looming agricultural crisis – as well as addressing climate change, tackling poverty and contributing to a growing ocean economy. This often overlooked algae can contribute to better food sources, replace plastics and fertilisers, boost medical innovations, mitigate global warming, repair biodiversity and support economies in coastal communities.
Join internationally renowned sustainability expert Vincent Doumeizel, author of The Seaweed Revolution, as he takes us on an extraordinary journey of our history with seaweed and how the seaweed revolution might just be a new hope for tomorrow.

A seed bomb is a small ball of seeds and soil prepared in advanced and to be carried in the pocket, ready for when you spot a piece of ground that could be more nature filled! Perfect for rewilding ex-industrial parts of the town or holding the coastal soils out of the sea.
Those who are interested can learn about the unique ecosystems where wildflowers and seaweeds meet.
We’ll also prepare throwing slings and practise our creative throws. Let’s be joyful in our efforts to protect the planet!
All materials are provided.
Please book before coming along.
This session is run by Seaweed Gardens, a local collective of researchers, creatives and growers. Seaweed Gardens are a group of active citizens working with the seaweed growing on our coast to make better soil in community garden projects, learning about the local seas in the process and then reimagining them through art in the wider community.
