Aberdeen Climate Action’s café looks into the future to speculate how NE farmers may change their farming for 2045 net zero targets
This cafe looks into the future to speculate how NE farmers may change their farming practices to satisfy the market, government’s limits on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, while enhancing biodiversity and tree cover.
Our panel of experts are
Rger Polsoon, Knock Farm, Huntly,
Prof Peter Smith, University of Aberdeen, and
Prof Bill Slee, James Hutton Institute (retired).
Roger will outline how he has made his farm meet the 2045 requirements, while at the same time maintaining profitability and increasing wildlife. Pete Smith will describe processes to maximise soil organic matter, while minimising GHG emissions from the soil and livestock.
Prof Bill Slee has the unenviable task of suggesting what policies the government will have to implement to ensure farmers curtail their GHG emissions, enhance areas of their farms as habitats for biodiversity, plant trees of a good standard, all while keeping their farms commercially viable.
After the three contributions, you the audience, will be able to ask questions and suggest ideas. The cafe will be hybrid, so you can be present in person in Aberdeen or on zoom.
Possible questions may include what to do with hill grazings if no longer needed for ruminants. Will the reluctance of farmers to plant trees on pasture encourage institutional investors to buy land for forest planting? Will these investors care about local communities soon to be buried under trees?
Barley growing for whisky and beer production may be encouraged by Scotland’s reputation in these sectors, but if ruminants are restricted, what will farmers do with draff, the waste product? Will organic manures replace inorganic fertilisers? Will food supply become more local, to minimise transport fuel use?
Will NE soils be suitable for minimum cultivations, designed to increase soil organic matter? Will soil compaction and weed control be a problem? Should tractors be electric, powered by biogas produced from draff and organic wastes, or from green hydrogen?
To encourage bird life, insects, and animal, should hedges be planted in Buchan? Will the wind allow them to be established? Will cover crops to minimise GHG emissions reduce seed availability for birds. These and other questions should be answered.
Between out and out rewilding and current ruminant livestock farming, is there a sweet spot that can be found that delivers multiple benefits in terms of red meat, biodiversity, enhanced water management and carbon sequestration? And if so, what policies will help us to find it?
So come along to put forward your views.

‘So, I’m stumped, can I ask you about deforestation, d’you think?’
STUMPED is a brand new one-act chamber opera by Lewis Coenen-Rowe, bringing together five old stories from varied times and places that are all united by a shared theme: what happens when you mess with trees.
Why do people keep coming back to this theme and what does it tell us about human history? Are these stories or a warning, or does that just sound stupid? Join two users of an internet forum as they explore their way through these stories and wonder what they have to tell us about our relationship with forests today.
This world premiere performance brings together a phenomenal cast of musicians including singers Shuna Sendall and Lea Shaw and instrumentalists Alice Rickards, Sonia Cromarty, Andrew Connell-Smith and Robyn Anderson, conducted by Thomas Butler. Artistic direction by Cecilia Stinton and scenography by Hunter Muir.
The performance will be preceded by a discussion with leading experts on trees, forests and how these have been interpreted by human art and storytelling, including artist and forester Amy Clarkson, researcher Dr Ophira Gamliel, and Sally Clark from the campaign Biofuelwatch. There will also be opportunities to learn about local environmental groups and how they are helping to preserve and restore our local natural heritage.
Tickets are available at £15 on a pay-what-you-can basis. Please purchase tickets for either the 6pm or the 8.15pm performance. All tickets include the discussion with invited speakers taking place at 7pm.
Accessibility
The venue is wheelchair accessible. If you have access requirements, please share these using the question box when booking your tickets. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact us.
STUMPED is funded by the Creative Scotland Open Fund.

From 15-17 Sep, millions of people around the world will take to the streets to take action for the climate and against the harmful impacts of the fossil fuel industry.
Please join speakers from Biofuelwatch and The Stop Burning Trees Coalition to find out about the many ways you can get involved in taking action to bring an end to dirty energy during the Global Fight to End Fossil Fuels Weekend of Action.
The climate crisis is escalating and in response so is the global movement for climate justice. Across the globe, we are coming together to fight back against the fossil fuel industry and its enablers. An end to fossil fuels cannot mean moving towards burning trees. Fossil fuel burning and tree burning are two sides of the same coin – all designed to allow energy companies to continue profiting at the expense of people and the planet.
Join us to find out how we can take action together to end dirty energy for good and help ensure a fossil-free future that will benefit people and the planet.

Join us for an afternoon walk around Achpopuli Farm, where Landworkers’ Alliance member Katharine Sharp uses agroecological methods to produce meat, eggs, wool crafts and tallow skin care products which are sold locally.
They are in the early stages of implementing a regenerative agroforestry system at Achpopuli Farm, having planted hedges, wood pasture and shelter belts, alongside allowing natural regeneration in the heath. Their sheep and geese are 100% pasture-fed with a holistic grazing plan, working with nature to establish a patchwork of different habitats that suit a diversity of wildlife.
On the way to the farm, we’ll also have a walk through the forest which has been managed by Abriachan Forest Trust since a community buy-out in 1998. You’ll get to see their outdoor classroom, nursery, some areas of continuous cover forestry and natural regeneration.
Tea, coffee & homemade cake included.
Accessibility
Parking is available at Abriachan Forest, and the walk to the farm is just over a mile through the forest. If you have any access issues, there is also limited parking available at Achpopuli Farm. During the farm walk we’ll be walking over uneven ground and there are no fully accessible paths.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact: [email protected]

Flamingo Land, Glenborrodale and Coul Links – these high profile access cases are just some examples where Ramblers Scotland has been involved in planning issues in recent years.
But a small planning application for a new house can also have a huge impact on local access if opportunities to comment are missed. This can mean well-used paths are lost, or wild places concreted over.
This session will give an outline of how you can get involved in responding to applications or to local placemaking activities. We’ll briefly look at local development plans, individual applications as well as how to understand national and local planning policy. You’ll also learn how you can get involved and where to get more support.
The session will help you to make sure that local access and paths are protected when new planning applications come along.
This session will be facilitated by Helen Todd, Ramblers Scotland’s campaigns & policy manager.
There are 15 places available for this session, but please add your name to the waiting list if the event is already full and we’ll contact you directly if a space becomes available.
We hope you can join us!

We’re so excited to invite you all again to join us on Saturday, the 30th of September to our second Meanwhile In Leith festival!
With that being said, we have sad news and good news to share from the Meanwhile Site. First the sad news; we will be saying goodbye to the space that’s been our home for the last 2,5 years by the end of October. The Meanwhile Site is getting developed and our wee garden has to go. BUT here’s the good news: We’re not leaving without a bang! We have all been working hard to come up with a festival lineup that resembles the joy and community that has been created here over the last years! So, for one last time, we’re celebrating our wonderful community at the Meanwhile Site, a shared community space between Leith Community Growers, Out of the Blue, local artists, Rowanbank Environmental Arts & Education, and Leith DIY. We want to create a day for all of Leith to share the joy of growing, nature, culture and community. The day will be full of fun workshops, creative drop-in sessions, live music and local stallholders; from a capoeira performance to parkour and skate workshops, learning the basics of bread making, and creative plant ID sessions – we’ve got you covered.
Join us from 12 pm to celebrate the Meanwhile Site together with
Leith DIY
Cat’s Skate Club

Feeling hopeless in the face of the gloomy headlines? This
Feeling hopeless in the face of the gloomy headlines?
This is the Festival for you.
War has scarred the 21st Century and the world is careering towards an even more precarious position. The rising potential for nuclear calamity fuses with another existential threat: human-induced catastrophic climate change and ecocide.
These threaten the very habitat we rely on.
Instead of diverting efforts towards the green infrastructure required to sustain all life, yet more resources are thrown into the war machine. Today’s nuclear bombs are many times more destructive than those dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
They represent the end of all species and life itself.
All of the nuclear states including India and China are developing new weapons while the non-nuclear powers create new pressure towards disarmament through the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The movement for nuclear disarmament is needed now more than at any time since the height of the Cold War. In Scotland, we have a special responsibility to rise to that challenge.
Removal of nuclear warheads from Faslane and Coulport would dismantle the British nuclear weapons system and prove that nuclear states can be disarmed. The world is watching.
The “Festival For Survival” will bring together international speakers, campaigners, creative artists and activists.
Let’s discuss how we can build a movement for nuclear disarmament, peace, the environment, and climate justice.
A mix of lectures, plenaries, workshops and cultural exhibits will bring hundreds of people together to discuss how we can make another world possible.
One Planet. Twin Threats.
Scotland Must Act.
