We’re very excited to be hosting our first Environmental Rights Summit!
Prof David Boyd, Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, will be one of our key note speakers.
This summer, with the consultations on environmental governance and the Human Rights Bill we have our chance to tell the Scottish Government what we need for an enforceable right to a healthy environment.
Join us to be the collective voice in demanding access to environmental justice in a court of law and ensuring our substantive and procedural rights are protected in the new Human Rights Bill.
We will have the day to share our hopes and aspirations in workshops and discussions for a greener, healthier and fairer Scotland for everyone.
This will be an in-person event for ERCS members, supporters, community campaigners, the voluntary sector and all our networks.

‘So, I’m stumped, can I ask you about deforestation, d’you think?’
STUMPED is a brand new one-act chamber opera by Lewis Coenen-Rowe, bringing together five old stories from varied times and places that are all united by a shared theme: what happens when you mess with trees.
Why do people keep coming back to this theme and what does it tell us about human history? Are these stories or a warning, or does that just sound stupid? Join two users of an internet forum as they explore their way through these stories and wonder what they have to tell us about our relationship with forests today.
This world premiere performance brings together a phenomenal cast of musicians including singers Shuna Sendall and Lea Shaw and instrumentalists Alice Rickards, Sonia Cromarty, Andrew Connell-Smith and Robyn Anderson, conducted by Thomas Butler. Artistic direction by Cecilia Stinton and scenography by Hunter Muir.
The performance will be preceded by a discussion with leading experts on trees, forests and how these have been interpreted by human art and storytelling, including artist and forester Amy Clarkson, researcher Dr Ophira Gamliel, and Sally Clark from the campaign Biofuelwatch. There will also be opportunities to learn about local environmental groups and how they are helping to preserve and restore our local natural heritage.
Tickets are available at £15 on a pay-what-you-can basis. Please purchase tickets for either the 6pm or the 8.15pm performance. All tickets include the discussion with invited speakers taking place at 7pm.
Accessibility
The venue is wheelchair accessible. If you have access requirements, please share these using the question box when booking your tickets. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact us.
STUMPED is funded by the Creative Scotland Open Fund.

Join us for an afternoon walk around Achpopuli Farm, where Landworkers’ Alliance member Katharine Sharp uses agroecological methods to produce meat, eggs, wool crafts and tallow skin care products which are sold locally.
They are in the early stages of implementing a regenerative agroforestry system at Achpopuli Farm, having planted hedges, wood pasture and shelter belts, alongside allowing natural regeneration in the heath. Their sheep and geese are 100% pasture-fed with a holistic grazing plan, working with nature to establish a patchwork of different habitats that suit a diversity of wildlife.
On the way to the farm, we’ll also have a walk through the forest which has been managed by Abriachan Forest Trust since a community buy-out in 1998. You’ll get to see their outdoor classroom, nursery, some areas of continuous cover forestry and natural regeneration.
Tea, coffee & homemade cake included.
Accessibility
Parking is available at Abriachan Forest, and the walk to the farm is just over a mile through the forest. If you have any access issues, there is also limited parking available at Achpopuli Farm. During the farm walk we’ll be walking over uneven ground and there are no fully accessible paths.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact: [email protected]

Would you like to join a monthly sociable book group? Would you be interested in reading environmental and climate topics, and participating in a research project?
Our first book group is on Monday 18th September about ‘Girl Meets Boy’ by Ali Smith!
Please read the book before attending the session so that you can contribute to the discussion. You are welcome to source your own copy or the books are available from Inverness Public Library, Farraline Park, Inverness. Email: [email protected] or Phone: 01349 781370.
The book group is part of PhD student Ingrid Brubaker’s research and is a collaboration between Velocity Café & Bicycle Workshop, UHI Inverness and High Life Highland Libraries. When you sign up for the reading group, you will be provided with the relevant forms and questionnaires.
A hot drink of your choice will be provided between 6.30-7pm.
Ingrid is interested in exploring whether reading groups might help engage people in environmental action or change their perception of the natural world. Climate fiction or ‘Cli-Fi’ is a new book genre which deals with environmental issues and climate change and often encourages the reader to consider our planet’s future and our relationship with nature.
You can join one or all of the book group sessions but please sign up on eventbrite each time. There are limited spaces for the session so please only book if you are able to attend. This event is supported by funding provided by the Highland Community Waste Partnership.
Photography: We will also take photographs during the session for sharing on social media and reporting purposes. By signing up, you are giving consent to having your photo taken. If you are not comfortable having your photograph taken, please let us know.
Attendance & cancellation policy: Please only book a ticket if you know you are able to attend. If your plans change, you must cancel your ticket and let us know with at least 48 hours notice of the event start time so that others can attend.

We want to tell 1000 Better Stories of community climate action to help everyone imagine a better and fairer future for all. Join us this Autumn to learn how to create powerful audio stories about what your own community and others are already doing, and to help inspire the groundswell of change that’s so urgently needed.

adding intro, outros, and music
hands on practice in editing
exporting your finished audio and transcript
collaboration
an opportunity to network with others
contributing your recorded interview to Everyday Changemaker series and joining SCCAN Storytelling Collective
BEFORE YOU COME ALONG: We recommend you complete Stories for Change Part 1: Super Simple Audio Recording but it’s not essential. Bring your own recordings to edit and register for a Descript account.
By the end of the workshop you will also be able to contribute your finished interview through our Everyday Changemaker podcast series or to use in your own audio projects.
You can continue to build your audio storymaking skills through upcoming Stories for Change workshops:

Join us this September for our annual CARES conference which will take place in central Glasgow on Tuesday 19 September 2023.
The Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) supports communities to engage, participate and benefit in the energy transition to net zero. This year we’ll be looking at how even more communities can take action on renewable energy, from decarbonising community buildings through to taking shared ownership in windfarms.
In our plenary sessions we’ll be joined by Gillian Martin MSP, Minister for Energy. We’ll hear from organisations and communities that are taking innovative approaches to community engagement as well as those that are working to decarbonise heat. We aim to bring you inspirational case studies as well as the policy and learning behind the action.
After lunch we’re running two sets of parallel practical sessions. Here you’ll be able to choose from workshops that include shared ownership, decarbonising community buildings, the latest information on heat pumps, and best practice in the use of community benefits. We’ve designed these sessions to help you understand what knowledge, skills, and actions you might need to develop your community renewable energy projects.
Throughout the day you’ll be able to meet Local Energy Scotland’s local development officers. You’ll be able to find out more about CARES and ask specific questions about existing renewable energy projects or an idea you might have that could be eligible for CARES support.
Please see below for our draft agenda and keep an eye out for updates!
The conference will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Cambridge Street, Glasgow G2 3HN.
The hotel is close to major public transport hubs. Cycle parking is available in the hotel’s underground car park.
The conference is free to attend, but you must book your space in advance.
Please note, the conference is primarily for communities with an interest in renewable energy. Please do not book multiple spaces if you are not from a community organisation. If you book a space and are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as you can so that we can reallocate it. We want to avoid wasting public funds on unused places as well as food waste.
Book online now. Remember to book your conference space and two workshop sessions.

This monthly online workshop will introduce artists and cultural organisations to environmental action and climate justice, and the many ways you can approach it including mitigation, adaptation and using your influence.
We will give you a background to Creative Carbon Scotland and show you how to take your first steps to tackle your carbon emissions, adapt to the impacts of climate change, and use your influence towards audiences and communities.
We will demonstrate some examples of creative climate action through our case studies, and there will also be an opportunity to ask us any questions you may have about starting your sustainability journey. The content across the three workshops will be the same.
The workshops will take place on:
Thurs 21 September 13:00-14:00
Fri 20 October 13:00-14:00
Wed 22 November 13:00-14:00
This session will be helpful to those new to culture and climate action, and for those wanting to apply for Creative Scotland’s Open Fund and Multi-Year Funding Programme that requires applicants to demonstrate their environmental commitments.

Come along to our Climate Café in Inverness – a space, for people to get together to talk and act on climate change! Hot drinks will be provided between 6.30 – 7pm.
THEME: Health & Sustainable Healthcare with Dr Rory Gibson (Medical Education Fellow in Sustainable Healthcare Education) and Dr Andew Dallas (Undergraduate Sustainability Lead for Medical Education at NHS Highland).
Have you thought about how the climate crisis is linked with the health crisis? When it comes to our nation’s carbon emissions, the NHS contributes between 4-5% of overall emissions! There is still so much to understand and learn about the relationships between our health, healthcare systems, and the climate. Join us to discuss what a healthcare system that is better for our health and our climate could look like.
We are moving our normal climate café slot to later in the month on the 26th as a one-off to coincide with Scotland’s Climate Week and the Highlands and Islands Climate Festival. The Highland & Islands Climate Festival is a celebration of localism and community engagement with a focus on climate action to be held for the whole of September 2023!
What is a Climate Café? A Climate Café is a community-led, informal, inclusive and inspiring space to get together, share ideas, information and get involved in climate action locally.
What is it like to go along to a Climate Café? Climate Cafés are relaxed and informal, so you should be able to just drop in, have a cuppa, and a chat – just like any café! It is a space where everyone gets to contribute and the conversation moves through the topics people are interested in. Expect the chat to be wide ranging, with a positive focus on what we can do!

We’re so excited to invite you all again to join us on Saturday, the 30th of September to our second Meanwhile In Leith festival!
With that being said, we have sad news and good news to share from the Meanwhile Site. First the sad news; we will be saying goodbye to the space that’s been our home for the last 2,5 years by the end of October. The Meanwhile Site is getting developed and our wee garden has to go. BUT here’s the good news: We’re not leaving without a bang! We have all been working hard to come up with a festival lineup that resembles the joy and community that has been created here over the last years! So, for one last time, we’re celebrating our wonderful community at the Meanwhile Site, a shared community space between Leith Community Growers, Out of the Blue, local artists, Rowanbank Environmental Arts & Education, and Leith DIY. We want to create a day for all of Leith to share the joy of growing, nature, culture and community. The day will be full of fun workshops, creative drop-in sessions, live music and local stallholders; from a capoeira performance to parkour and skate workshops, learning the basics of bread making, and creative plant ID sessions – we’ve got you covered.
Join us from 12 pm to celebrate the Meanwhile Site together with

An urgent and timely dance-theatre work, BURNT OUT encapsulates one Australian’s experience of the devastating bushfires and the personal experience of the daughter of an environmental geochemist.
Weaving spoken word, movement and a lump of coal, BURNT OUT takes us on a journey and ask the question ‘why do we feel we are unable to acknowledge the changes around us even when surrounded by thick smoke?’
An intimate personal story and a universal meditation, BURNT OUT is a reflection on our changing climate.
This performance is BSL interpreted.
This show is followed by a 30 minute post-show discussion.
The post-show discussion will be led by a local environment activist/artist in discussion with Penny Chivas.
Burnt Out is funded by Creative Scotland’s Touring Fund.
Original music from Paul Michael Henry interwoven with lighting from Great Snakes.

One Australian’s experience of our changing climate
by Penny Chivas
this performance is BSL interpretted.
Weaving spoken word and movement, taken on a journey through Australia’s devastating bushfires including Penny’s own experiences, through their ignition and devastation, and left with space to ponder how we got here.
Embedded in its soundscape are sounds from Black Summer — of magpies that have learned to mimic emergency sirens, of the shark sirens used to draw attention to the fire-blackened skies, and of helicopters circling overhead. Original music from Paul Michael Henry is interwoven with the delicate lighting of David Bowes.
Bringing together both past and future, fact and personal lived account, Burnt Out is at once an intimate personal story and a universal meditation and reflection on our changing climate.
“The show emerges from the smoke as a moving meditation on Australia’s attitude to the environment.” The Stage
Running time: 50m, followed by post-show Q&A with leading expert on eco-anxiety, Dr Bridget Bradley, a Lecturer in Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews. What would a sustainable retrofit of neighbourhoods across Scotland look like, during the climate and housing crises? At this upcoming Green Tease explore the overlap between housing struggles and climate breakdown with artists, activists, architects and sustainability practitioners.
Together we will discuss how art and culture can support a just transition that can transform our homes, streets and schemes, in an environmentally and socially sustainable way. As bell hooks said: ‘The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is – it’s to imagine what is possible.’
Co-created by Creative Carbon Scotland and Scott McAulay from the Anthropocene Architecture School, we invite you to imagine how we might thrive together if our neighbourhoods were prepared for the changing climate. Through discussions, and exhibitions we invite you to reimagine what it means to ‘retrofit’, from individual homes to entire communities, reflecting upon our relationships to home and place.
This Green Tease will be an afternoon of coming together to explore the role of art and culture in shaping the future, and the role of those retrofitting homes, in practically getting us there. The tools to build sustainable, low-energy homes and to retrofit existing ones to standards fit for a climate emergency already exist – such buildings becoming the norm would both change and save lives. But without societal transformation, they will only remain possibilities.
Programme:
1.00pm: Welcome and introduction: why our built environment matters during the climate crisis, and the role it could play in Scotland’s Just Transition.
1.30pm: Reimagining retrofit workshop. Connecting home to the climate crisis and reimagining what it means ‘to retrofit’ at scales beyond individual homes with ACAN Scotland, BE Changemakers, Imagine If CIC & the Architecture Fringe.
2.30pm: Break with coffee and tea
2.45pm: Exhibition, reflection and networking time. Chance to watch the film Dampbusters by Winnie Herbstein which explores the past, present and future of community organising in Glasgow, and to explore exhibition material on housing from Imagine If CIC and the Wyndford exhibition, co-created by students from Glasgow School of Art with the residents who live there.
3.30pm: Drawing and willow workshop on imagining a different housing future
4.45pm: Wrapping up and thank you!
About the organisers
Creative Carbon Scotland is Scotland’s leading arts and sustainability charity and Creative Scotland is the development body for the arts, screen and creative industries in Scotland. Green Tease is our ongoing informal events programme connecting cultural practices and environmental sustainability across Scotland. If you have an idea for an event please apply here.
Collaborator
Scott McAulay is a Glaswegian climate and spatial justice activist, a founding member of ACAN Scotland, a Co-Producer of the Architecture Fringe, and a Part 2 Architectural Assistant at Architype – one of the U.K.’s leading sustainable architecture studios, that specialises in Passivhaus-led and low carbon design. His work with the Anthropocene Architecture School has created spaces for thousands of people to come together and learn about the climate solutions and opportunities for a Just Transition in our built environments, and generated international impacts in architectural education – teaching widely across the U.K., Turtle Island, and mainland Europe, and beyond. In 2023 so far,
Scott has undertaken a residency during Architecture is Climate at Central St Martins – exploring the theme of Unlearning Powerlessness, contributed to European Sustainable Energy Week 2023 in Brussels on the invitation of the Architects Council of Europe, and contributed to an upcoming anthology sharing outcomes of 2021’s School of Re-Construction. Scott supports a variety of climate justice, and community causes across Scotland, is an active member of Living Rent — Scotland’s tenants’ union. and is currently co-creating Retrofit Reimagined 2023 with partners across the U.K.
About the Anthropocene Architecture School
The Anthropocene Architecture School is an un/learning infrastructure with activist roots and ethos: fusing architectural education with Climate Literacy, explorations of Agency, Entanglement, Spatial Justice, and the Radical Imagination. Through its Crisis Studios, participatory workshops, talks, peoples’ assemblies, university lectures and dozens of events, it has created spaces for thousands of people, within and outwith traditional schools of architecture, to learn about where construction intersects with the climate crisis, what is already possible, and invited many more to make time to imagine the future otherwise. You can access AAS resources here, find its library here, and support its work into the future here.

Feeling desperate about climate change, one family uproots their life to join an ecological experiment.
Feeling desperate about climate change, one family uproots their life to join an ecological experiment.
The Mo family lead a picture-perfect life on their farm in Norway. But recently, climate anxiety and fear for the planet that will be left to their three children is keeping them up at night. Taking a giant leap of faith, the family decides to take action and move to ‘Permatopia’: a brand new self-sufficient, organic farming cooperative in Denmark.
But will green community living really be a sustainable solution for a family of five headstrong individualists, each with their own very different expectations and dreams? Journey to Utopia is a heartwarming and brutally honest film about one family’s attempt to make a real difference under the shadow of climate change.
Duration, release date and languages
The film screening will run for around 90 minutes, and will be followed by discussion and online networking. This film was released in 2020 and is in Danish and Norwegian, with English subtitles.

Feeling hopeless in the face of the gloomy headlines?
This is the Festival for you.
War has scarred the 21st Century and the world is careering towards an even more precarious position. The rising potential for nuclear calamity fuses with another existential threat: human-induced catastrophic climate change and ecocide.
These threaten the very habitat we rely on.
Instead of diverting efforts towards the green infrastructure required to sustain all life, yet more resources are thrown into the war machine. Today’s nuclear bombs are many times more destructive than those dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
They represent the end of all species and life itself.
All of the nuclear states including India and China are developing new weapons while the non-nuclear powers create new pressure towards disarmament through the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The movement for nuclear disarmament is needed now more than at any time since the height of the Cold War. In Scotland, we have a special responsibility to rise to that challenge.
Removal of nuclear warheads from Faslane and Coulport would dismantle the British nuclear weapons system and prove that nuclear states can be disarmed. The world is watching.
The “Festival For Survival” will bring together international speakers, campaigners, creative artists and activists.
Let’s discuss how we can build a movement for nuclear disarmament, peace, the environment, and climate justice.
A mix of lectures, plenaries, workshops and cultural exhibits will bring hundreds of people together to discuss how we can make another world possible.
One Planet. Twin Threats.
Scotland Must Act.

Circular Communities Scotland is delighted to invite our members, supporter members, and those involved in the circular third sector in Scotland to our 2023 Annual Conference, Uniting for a Circular Scotland.
This year, we’re calling for unification across all social, political, and economic divides to create a more circular economy in Scotland.
As the climate crisis deepens and the cost of living continues to rise, it’s more important than ever that we come together to make meaningful and impactful change.
We’ll be celebrating amazing examples of partnership working that show the strength and power that comes with cooperating for a greater cause, and as always, showcasing our members’ incredible work in Scotland’s circular third sector.
Circular Communities Scotland members collaborate in a variety of amazing ways, whilst each providing environmental and social benefits to their own communities across Scotland. Together, they contribute to our circular economy, and make tangible differences to people’s lives, challenging social issues like homelessness, poverty and inequality.
Following the hugely successful conference last year, this will be another in person conference hosted at the Radisson BLU in Glasgow in their completely refurbished events suit on the first floor. This will be an amazing opportunity for our members and the sector to come together in one space, to connect with one another and network.
