An Introduction to Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN). ACAN is a network of individuals taking collective action outside of the business structures of the status quo. With hundreds of active members from architecture and related built environment professions the network takes action to address the twin crises of climate and ecological breakdown. At this event – you’ll hear about their campaigns, projects and initiatives from some of the coordinators of the group.

ACAN exists because three architects were stood together on Waterloo Bridge during Extinction Rebellion’s week long occupation, and asked themselves ’what more can we do about the climate?’ None were at decision making level at their companies but knew they had to channel their energy and expertise somewhere. Turns out the idea struck a chord with others frustrated by their industry and what started as three people is now a network of thousands with chapter in countries across the world.

ACAN is addressing the way our built environment is made, operated and renewed in response to the climate emergency. As a network of individuals, we channel personal energy, expertise and action towards a common goal – the systemic change of our profession and the construction industry as a whole. We see this as a matter of urgency. Our mission is to mobilise a new movement of professional activists towards this goal by building an open, supportive and inclusive organisation. ACAN empowers individuals to proactively seek change and facilitates collective effort through a shared platform built on collaboration.

Our Thematic Working groups are campaigning on key issues including: Embodied Carbon, Natural Materials, Circular Economy & Existing Buildings. Our Regional Chapters in Scotland & Wales are taking local action, and our International Chapters in places such as Portugal, Ireland & India are establishing ACAN networks in their own countries. At this event you’ll hear from coordinators in the ACAN Thematic, Regional & International groups on some of the climate action happening within the network.
