Event Details

Join us for two short films exploring the world of oil and what’s beyond it from the perspective of those who work in the oil industry and those who live in a city shaped by it.

As the climate crisis intensifies, it becomes ever more urgent that we transition away from fossil fuels. A just transition requires frontline workers and communities to have a meaningful role in shaping what that looks like, but this is lacking from almost all current planning for the shift away from oil. These two documentaries are a small contribution to this conversation.

Offshore is an independent documentary that brings together varying perspectives on working in offshore oil and gas and renewable energy – and explores what the coming energy transition means for workers and communities around the UK North Sea. Watch the trailer here.

The Future is Not F*cked is a documentary made in Aberdeen in late 2021, in which local performers start to answer the question ‘how do we let go of the world of oil and all it represents?’. Through an infusion of live performance, interviews and cityscape, this film attempts to tell some of those stories showing how oil seeps deep into the lives, aspirations and personal relationships of people living and working in Aberdeen and beyond.

The films will be followed by a short discussion.
