Event Background

The City of Edinburgh has set an ambitious target for Edinburgh to become a net zero city by 2030: “this means that by 2030, we want to remove the same amount of greenhouse gases that we, as a city, put into the air.”

In the coming months, the Council will select three areas to become the city’s first ‘net zero communities’. EVOC believes that this is an opportunity to strengthen existing grassroots initiatives across the city, and ensure that local communities have the agency to transform their own neighbourhoods.

With the support of design non-profit ASF-UK, this one-day workshop will explore how place-based initiatives focussed on climate, resilience and community-led planning can benefit Edinburgh’s diverse communities. Together, we will explore how we can make this process inclusive for all, and ensure that the transition towards carbon neutrality leaves no one and no place behind.

ASF-UK is a non-profit organisation that uses community-led design and planning to create fairer cities. We use our knowledge and skills to elevate the voice of those who are most affected by planning and design decisions, so that together we can tackle the deepest social and environmental challenges that communities face. We believe that when diverse people have real influence on decision making, it will lead to creating cities that are socially and environmentally just.
