The Pitcairn Islands, a UK Overseas Territory, are a group of four small islands covering a total land area of just . The Pitcairn Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA), includes the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the territorial seas of Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Islands, covering , was designated by the Government of Pitcairn Islands in September 2016.
This seminar will discuss how this huge MPA was created and how researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the UK government are collaborating to study not only the rich marine ecosystems but how the local communities were involved in the process of creating and managing what is the 12th largest MPA on Earth.
