Event Details

Join the University of Edinburgh, the UK Government, and cefas for an evening lecture: “Beyond the Bounty: the 2023 Pitcairn Marine Protected Area Expedition.”

The Pitcairn Islands, a UK Overseas Territory, are a group of four small islands covering a total land area of just 49 square kilometres. The Pitcairn Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA), includes the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the territorial seas of Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands, covering 841,910 square kilometres, was designated by the Government of Pitcairn Islands in September 2016.

This seminar will discuss how this huge MPA was created and how researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the UK government are collaborating to study not only the rich marine ecosystems but how the local communities were involved in the process of creating and managing what is the 12th largest MPA on Earth.
