What is a community fridge?

A community fridge is a space that brings people together to share food, meet up, learn new skills and prevent fresh food from going to waste. They’re open to all and anyone can share or take food, including surplus from supermarkets, local food businesses, producers, households and gardens. Fridges are run by community groups in shared spaces such as schools, community centres and shops.

What is this session about?

The Community Fridge Network is coordinated by Hubbub and brings together all UK based groups running a community fridge. Hubbub is an award-winning environmental charity that’s all about inspiring action that’s good for the environment and for everyone.

In this talk Laura Gillard, Project Co-ordinator – Community Fridge Network at Hubbub, will talk through the process of setting up a community fridge, from the initial idea through to the day-to-day running of a community fridge. Laura will cover topics including choosing a location, health and safety, and building links with food donors.

We will also be joined by Luca Pornaro from Zero Waste Scotland to briefly tell us about Zero Waste Scotland’s redistribution work, as well as hearing from one or two community groups who have set up a community fridge and are happy to share their learnings.

There’ll be lots of opportunities to ask questions throughout.

Who is this event for?

This session will be useful for community groups considering starting a community fridge. Please note this session is UK specific.
