Our Energy Future Must Be Public!

Join us to hear why public ownership of energy production and infrastructure is an essential part of any plans to hit climate change targets.

The Scottish Government is consulting on its new Energy Strategy and Just Transition Plan. There is a large gap where it should have explained what public actions are needed to ensure change at the pace and scale needed.

This event will hear how the privatised energy system is giving us fuel poverty, soaring energy prices and profits; and failing to deliver a Just Transition. Then it will look at publicly-owned solutions in key sectors, from local to national levels.

Speakers will include:

Roz Foyer, Scottish Trade Union Congress

Mary Church, Friends of the Earth Scotland

Sean Sweeney, Trade Unions for Energy Democracy

Craig Dalzell, Common Weal

Richard Hardy, Prospect trade union

Katie Gallogly-Swan, member of Just Transition Commission

Professor Andrew Cumbers, Glasgow University

Breakout sessions on

Great Scottish Energy? A publicly owned energy company for generation

Municipal Enterprise – energy efficiency and affordable heat delivered by council-owned enterprises, tackling fuel poverty

Local Generation – local control gives community benefits and accountability

Public control – using property ownership and regulation to tie private companies into the just transition

The Just Transition Partnership advocates for action to meet climate change targets in ways which protect workers’ livelihoods and make Scotland more equal and inclusive. Its membership includes Friends of the Earth Scotland, Scottish Trade Union Congress, Unite the Union, UNISON Scotland, UCU Scotland, CWU, PCS, New Economics Foundation, Common Weal and WWF Scotland. For its recent statements on, for example, just transition, energy prices and the cost of living strikes; the circular economy; and the industrial disputes on the railways, go to www.jtp.scot/category/policy/
