If you’re a councillor or candidate who is passionate about delivering climate action for your local community, join this event to find out what you can do to secure climate friendly pensions.

Background

The science is clear: the climate crisis is here. Millions of people are already facing the destructive consequences of a warming world and the IPCC’s most recent report is a reality check that it’s going to get much worse unless we take urgent action to cut emissions.

Despite more than 75% of councils declaring a climate emergency, UK local authority pension funds still invest around £10bn in highly polluting fossil fuels.

Councillors can play a crucial role in the transition to a zero-carbon future by supporting an end to investment in fossil fuels. Whether you are a candidate for election, or a sitting councillor not up for election, join us on the 2nd May to find out more.

Event details

The webinar will feature a series of short presentations on;

• Why ending fossil fuel investment is a financially prudent thing to do — by Mark Campanale, founder of Carbon Tracker, the world-leading green financial think tank. Mark’s influential work has been described in the New Yorker as ‘turning the financial world’s view of climate upside down’.

• How councillors in the UK have led on climate action in their pension fund, and how you can too.

The event is open to all candidates running in the May 2023 local elections, sitting councillors, union reps who are represented on local government pension boards, and local government staff in any position.

Whether you are new to this topic or have pursued it before, on your pension fund committee or not, in leadership or in opposition, we hope the event will be insightful for you.
