SPRINGBOARD local assembly for creative climate action - Glasgow

Creative Carbon Scotland is working with the National Theatre of Scotland and other organisations across Scotland to launch a series of local assemblies for creative climate action. SPRINGBOARD brings together individual artists and cultural organisations with people working on climate change to form powerful local networks for climate action. Local assemblies are an opportunity to connect with other practitioners in your region to address climate change collectively.

At the Glasgow assembly, Creative Carbon Scotland will lead practical workshop, ending the afternoon with a discussion about how people want to work in future, and time to do some networking over drinks.

These local assemblies are for anyone working or volunteering in the arts, screen, creative industries, museums, heritage, libraries or climate change fields. Other local assemblies are taking place around Scotland – see www.creativecarbonscotland.com for details.

The outline programme is as follows:

1:45pm – Arrival

2:00-2:10 – Welcome

2:10-3:30 – Session 1 (choice of two workshops)

Climate justice and arts & culture

Climate justice is a way of understanding how climate change results from and exacerbates existing inequalities and injustices as well as how climate action can help create a fairer world. This workshop will share our research into how climate justice thinking is relevant to the arts and culture sector in Scotland and provide opportunities to explore how this relates to your own organisation or individual practice.

Understand your main carbon emissions and how to implement emissions reductions.

Creative Scotland and other bodies are increasingly asking applicants for arts funding to measure, report and plan to reduce their carbon emissions. In this session we will share tools to identify and understand your main emissions, and together you will devise and commit to creative ways to tackle them. Appropriate for those with all levels of prior experience in carbon management (including none!).

3:45-4:45 – Session 2 (choice of two workshops)

Arts and environmental collaboration on climate change

Collaboration between the arts and environmental sectors can create diverse opportunities for more effective action on climate change. This session will explore the ways that these fields can benefit from collaboration, offer examples of what has been achieved in the past and explore the practical steps needed to make collaborative projects a success. The session will end with an opportunity to consider what a collaborative climate change project would look like for you.

Understand cultural adaptation and your influence in the wider culture ecosystem.

Cultural organisations are experiencing the impacts of climate change, from flooding to travel disruption but also warmer summers. Adaptation is the term given to thinking about how to manage the risks and grasp the opportunities this presents. This session will introduce you to climate adaptation in the context of your local area as well as globally, enabling you to identify main climate change risks using our Adapting Our Culture toolkit and collaboratively planning how to approach adaptation in your work.
